This Week - 02.06.2020
This weeks guest speaker at our Zoom meeting was Avalon Airport CEO - Justin Giddings.
Justin explained how Avalon Airport achieved the highest level of arrivals & departures ever in February 2020, and three weeks later there was no flights in or out. For the 12 months to 31.12.2019 1.5 million passengers used Avalon.
Avalon currently has 36 Qantas & Jetstar aircraft in storage. There are 40 aircraft engineers located at Avalon, who are maintaining the 36 planes. Qantas are currently re commissioning four aircraft to bring back into service in the next month. Justin believes a number of the 36 planes will still be at Avalon in December 2021.
As Avalon's income has dropped by 50%, his permanent staff are entitled to Job Keeper. Avalon are currently undertaking a complete painting & refurbishment of its domestic & international terminals.
The International Air Show scheduled for March 2021 has been moved till November 2021.
Justin believes the airline industry recovery will take some years, and that Melbourne Airport are projecting to be 50% of pre Covid levels by 31.12.2021. Interestingly, Qantas/Jetstar have issued draft procedures to apply when flights re-commence. It covers cleaning, staff using masks, no serving of meals on shirt flights, and social distancing in terminals. Once passengers enter the plane, Qantas/Jetstar intend to use all seats on the plane.
