PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

President’s Message

Back on Deck (sort of)
I was delighted to be able to rejoin this week’s meeting.

I was admitted to Footscray Hospital on Sept 12 for an Angiogram and spent three days there before being transferred to the Royal Melbourne Hospital for quintuple bypass surgery on Sept 17.

I cannot speak highly enough of the wonderful hospital system, surgeons, medical and nursing staff that we have here in Australia.

I sincerely thank our Vice-President, Colin Muir for all his assistance during my absence. Colin chaired our Club meetings on Sept 13 & 20, in addition to the Board Meeting on Sept 21.

Colin himself now faces some major surgery in two week’s time at St Vincents Hospital.  I extend to Colin the very best wishes from all of us at Werribee Rotary for what lies ahead for him.

Melbourne Cup Sweep
Ross Conley has arranged a $10 Sweep for the 24 horses in this year’s Melbourne Cup.
Ross will be emailing everyone with information about the prizes, including how to pay your $10 entry fee.

If there is sufficient interest then a second Sweep may be possible.

Facemasks Project – A Bonus Santa Spinoff!
The Facemasks Project team produced more cloth masks than expected.
About 400 have been distributed to the Werribee Salvos and Wyndham Uniting Care, as needed. Thank you to Mary Macauley and the Cut, Giggle & Sew team for your great work.
The surplus masks have gone to Brian Ahmed (Wyndham Cache) and John Micallef (Werribee Cartridge World), who have been selling them as a Rotary fund-raising project.
As last week’s meeting, the Board agreed to provide up to $500 to Wyndham Uniting Care to purchase Santa Toys Gift Vouchers to use to buy presents for children from needy families.

End Polio Now - Walk With Us
There is still time to support Rob and Lyn as TEAM FAVA walks to raise money for Rotary’s International Project End Polio Now.
You can donate to ROB here:

Have a great week.

Michael

This Week on Zoom

This week on Zoom we had a presentation on Melbourne Metro Rail Tunnel Project, by Communication Officers Nicole Cuiava and Cecilia Hollen.

The project commenced in 2015, and is on schedule to be completed by 2025. Tunneling is currently 55% complete. The massive tunnel boring machines move at 10 metres a day, and the lining of the tunnels is occurring directly behind the tunel boring machines.

Essentially there will be 5 new underground stations, Arden, Parkville, State Library (under city loop), Town Hall & Anzac. There is a new station at the start of the Western end at South Kensington, and a major upgrade of the South Yarra Station at the Eastern end.

Sixty five (65) new high speed trains have been ordered, in configurations of 7 and 10 carriages. The carriages are all open plan and will hold many more passengers than the existing trains.

Alphabet Racing - after meetings 6 & 7

It's been a big weekend of racing and things are starting to hot up.

There is a bit of a trend appearing, with the organisers of the footy tipping, and alphabet racing on top of the leader board. We are all playing for second in the Melbourne Cup Sweep??

Hovecat is continuing to perform consistently and has a narrow one-length lead over Peter Peter Pumpkin Eater who has sprinted into second place after gaining good points with "S' and 'T'. The question is whether he can go on with it as he tiptoes into the never-never land of U to Z.

Barbarella occupies third spot but is not travelling that well. She has two other experienced mares Anne of Green Grasses and Wendy Winx breathing down her neck and poised to swoop past her as they turn the bend out of the straight.

Jumbo Jimbo is right behind the girls but he would be disappointed with his recent form after setting the world on fire last week

And watch out for Filthy Phil who has gone three wide and is now well positioned after earning himself 10 big points. He seems to be taking this race seriously which is a bit unusual. He is running alongside Graham the Groper whose jockey, in the famous black and yellow colours, is standing in the saddle and waving to the crowd as if he had already won the race. His actions will come under scrutiny by the stewards. I suspect he will receive a severe fine for it.

A few early pretenders have hit the wall after picking up no points. They are Steady Redding, Garfield the Cat and Vas O'Leen who promised so much early on.

And the old stager, The Club, has finally decided to get his act together and move forward. He was impressive with a 7-point haul. There's probably more to come from this dinosaur in weeks to come.

That leaves poor old Pristine Christine stone-motherless last. Is she being cagey? Will she start her run shortly? Or is she already out of petrol tickets? Time will tell.

Equal First – Hoveycat 25 points
Second – Peter Peter Pumpkin Eater 24 points
Third – Barbarella 22 points
