Vocational Visit to Werribee International Horse Quarantine Centre
We were privileged to be able to visit the International Horse Quarantine Centre at the Werribee Racecourse. This is used for overseas racehorses visiting Melbourne for the Spring Racing Carnival.
Operated by Racing Victoria, the centre allows international horses to arrive in Melbourne, and stay in full training during their quarantine.
The centre has three lots of stables. The main complex Newminster Stables - 16 horses, the Vintage Crop stables near Eagle stadium - 16 horses, and the American stables in Racecourse Rd - 8 stables.
The centre is managed by AQUIS, and strict bio diversity measures are observed.
- Every person entering the compound, must shower on entering, and leave their clothes outside,
- They change into new clothes when inside the facility.
- On exiting the same applies.
- 24 hour security applies
- All horse floats and gear must be treated before going into the centre.
- All horses must undertake 14 days of quarantine.
We finished the night with a lovely meal at the Racecourse Hotel.
