This Week : Youth Suicide Awareness

Guest Speakers -  Phil Wheatley & Gerry Lambourne - Brighton North Rotary

Guest : Micki Hovey

Phil & Gerry spoke with passion about their work with Youth Suicide Awareness which is a major social problem in Australia.
The average number of suicides across Australia over the last 5 years is 2,795 a year. This is nearly 55 deaths a week. Well over 50% are youth's between 14 & 25 years of age. It has been estimated that 135 people are significantly impacted for every suicide.
Twice as many suicides are men than women. More women attempt suicide than men, but take softer actions, that often result in self harm or overdoses, but not death.
A major concern is that youth suicide in country and regional areas, is significantly higher than in metropolitan areas.
Some interesting facts:
- 40% of youths who committed suicide experienced bullying
- Support resources are inadequate, and 70% of youth suicides had no support or counselling
- 61% of youth suicides had had a recent break-up of a relationship.
- Depression is a major factor but is not understood.

Phil & Gerry encouraged the club to fund a scholarship for a Youth Service worker to undertake the 2 year Graduate Diploma of Adolescent Health, at Melbourne University.

ST. ANDREW'S PARISH FAIR - 16th NOVEMBER

The St. Andrew's primary school will be holding its annual Parish Fair on Saturday 16th November and President Brian is keen for us to have a stall at the event. He says this is an opportunity for us to have a greater exposure with the greater community and to raise some funds at this well-established and popular family fair.

PAUL HARRIS BREAKFAST - 21st NOVEMBER

The Rotary Club of Central Melbourne is holding its 27th annual Rotary Foundation Paul Harris Breakfast on Thursday 21st November 2019 at the RACV City Club.

The guest speaker will be Dr Andrew Browning who has spent 17 years living with his family in Ethiopia amongst some of the poorest people in the world.

He specialises in treating a devastating birth injury called obstetric fistula.

Andrew is one of only a handful of surgeons in the world who have dedicated their lives to helping treat this problem. His charity has now built 3 maternity hospitals in Africa.

Tickets for the breakfast are $70 per person or $650 for a table of 10.

Alphabet Racing

Front runner Galloping Gail (26 points) continues to maintain a good lead after the mid-week Caulfield race meeting.

Super Sandlant (14) is performing consistently in second place but can he catch the runaway leader?

But look at Split Enz (13) go! He has cut his way through the field to jump into third after a sustained burst of speed. Then comes Frisky Fava (12) followed by Mad Dog Muir (10) and Blocked Pipes Pante (9).

The rest of the big field are all jostling for position. And it's good to see that Frothy Joffa (2) and Light Fingers Fava (4), who is a half-brother to Frisky Fava, have finally jumped from the stalls. But they'll have to work hard to catch up.

That leaves just two horses stuck in the barrier - Smokin' Joe and The Egg Man.

The next race meeting is the Caulfield Cup on Saturday which is likely to sort the thoroughbreds from the ponies.
