This Week : Youth Suicide Awareness
Guest Speakers - Phil Wheatley & Gerry Lambourne - Brighton North Rotary
Guest : Micki Hovey
Phil & Gerry spoke with passion about their work with Youth Suicide Awareness which is a major social problem in Australia.
The average number of suicides across Australia over the last 5 years is 2,795 a year. This is nearly 55 deaths a week. Well over 50% are youth's between 14 & 25 years of age. It has been estimated that 135 people are significantly impacted for every suicide.
Twice as many suicides are men than women. More women attempt suicide than men, but take softer actions, that often result in self harm or overdoses, but not death.
A major concern is that youth suicide in country and regional areas, is significantly higher than in metropolitan areas.
Some interesting facts:
- 40% of youths who committed suicide experienced bullying
- Support resources are inadequate, and 70% of youth suicides had no support or counselling
- 61% of youth suicides had had a recent break-up of a relationship.
- Depression is a major factor but is not understood.
Phil & Gerry encouraged the club to fund a scholarship for a Youth Service worker to undertake the 2 year Graduate Diploma of Adolescent Health, at Melbourne University.
