It was very pleasing to have Ian Knight and Colin Muir at our meeting and able to inform us that they are very focused to keep building on the progress they have made to date in their recuperation. Ian is now walking a little with a walking stick while Colin is undertaking further assessments after his operation and hopes gradually to get back to normal.
Rotary Continues during Lockdown
As we now go into a second week of Covid-19 lockdown, our weekly meetings will continue on Zoom. Hopefully, the lockdown will end after 2 weeks and we can start getting back to normal.
Next week our Guest Speakers are Phil Abram (Pastor) and Tim Kite (Assistant) from the Werribee Salvation Army who will joining us on Zoom.
Clouds certainly do have silver linings!
Ross Smith gave us both bad and good news regarding our next Bunnings BBQ booked in for Thurs June 3rd.
Due to the Covid lockdown, all BBQ’s have been cancelled until further notice. To recompense us for our loss of this week’s BBQ, Bunnings are giving the Club a Bunnings Voucher for $500.
Well done Ross on achieving such a great result from this NON-EVENT!
During this ongoing lockdown, aim to increase you exercise and cut back on the alcohol!
Well what a huge surprise - we are back on Zoom again?
Even with our "Gold Standard" tracing system that is the envy of all the states, we all new that we only needed one or two community cases, and Dan Junior would shut us down again.
So the latest news today, is they have shut us down for another week, and will review progress on Thursday 10th. If all goes well between now and then, you would imagine, they will extend the lockdown for another 3-4 days to include the June long weekend. (They wouldn't want tens of thousand of metro people heading for the country for the weekend)
Thanks to Ian Hovey, he organised another one of his very interesting Ted Talks.
This weeks talk was by Sir Ken Robinson, who passed away in August last year aged 70 years, from cancer.
Sir Ken wrote many books, and became an International Adviser on education. He had the role in the UK as the Director of the Arts in School Program, which drove his passion for a greater emphasis on the arts in education. He received many awards for his passion for the arts in education. His Ted Talk explored the notion that our current system of education, suppresses the creativity of students, in the desire of the school to have conformity.
As a result of Covid, there is no in person International Convention again, and the convention will be a Virtual Event.
The Convention will be held from 12 to 16 June 2021, with a wonderful lineup of activities, speakers & breakout sessions. Some of the speakers are:
Dr Bruce Aylward - Epidemiologist and adviser to World Health Organisation
Dr Binish Desai - Eco Electric Tech Group
Dr Tedros Ghebreyesus - Director General - World Health Organisation
Sascha Hingst - German Television Presenter
Vanessa Nakate - Climate Actavist & founder of Rise Up.
Anna Ronnlund - VP of Gapminder Foundation
Sanj Srikanthan - CEO Shelterbox.
and many more.
Google 2021 Rotary International Convention to register. The cost depends on what you register for but is less than $100.
Werribee Rotary Changeover
This years changeover will be a lunch at Tino & Robyn Ballan's, on Sunday 20th June 2021. We have our fingers crossed that Junior Dictator Dan lifts the restrictions in time. We need the lockdown to be lifted, and the number of people who can attend a gathering.
Just when we thought we had caught 'the egg man' he tips 9/9, gets a bonus point, and shoots out to a three point lead again.
And then to rub salt in the wounds, he sends the Bulletin Editor a cartoon gloating about his achievements. We need to 'bring him down quickly'
Ian Hovey got the $10 for closest margin on Friday night.
One tipper - Sunliner got 8, and then there were heaps of 7's. Sticks, Daide, Graham R, Lucky Phil, Tony Tod & Ross C.
The leaderboard after 11 rounds is;
Brian Ahmed 75
Ross Conley 72
Tony Todaro 70
Phil Purdy 70
The hard luck story of the round was 'the bulletin editor' who picked Adelaide, but changed his tip to Melbourne 5 minutes before the ball was bounced, ending up with 8 out of 9.
Thank you to everyone who volunteered for the Bunnings BBQ on Thursday 3rd. We had a great response with 4 people for each shift, and another 4 emergencies.
I spoke to Bunnings, and they wont be allocating any new BBQ's until the lockdown is lifted. It is unlikely there will be any in June.
Guest Speakers
Everyone knows someone with an interesting story to tell. Please pass their details on to Ian Hovey so we can follow them up to speak to us in person or on Zoom at a later date.
Very Special Kids BBQ
We have been asked to do a BBQ for Very Special Kids at Werribee Open Range Zoo on Sat 19/6. Given the extension of the lockdown, this function 'might be doubtful'. We will advise as soon as we get information from VSK.
Bingo
Bingo is also on 'hold' until the lockdown, and the restriction on the size of gatherings is lifted.
Once we start again, we will the next four groups will be:
Roster for bingo (be there by 6.30):
Colin Muir & Michael Redding
Phil Purdy & Tino Ballan
Kathryn Williams & Mary Macaulay
Enzo Maddalon & Graham Roper
Interact Club
The 20 members are meeting every week. The club are going to construct a Community Garden in the school grounds for families to grow vegetables. Jim Randall has agreed to supply the soil for the project. Well done James. Werribee Rotary has donated $1,000 to the garden cost.
Annual Report
We are aiming to hand out the Annual Report to members at the Changeover Lunch on 20 June. Can Board members start to prepare their reports and photos, as the Secretary will need them in the next week, to collate and get to the printer.
Captain Phill Abram is pastor at the Salvation Army Centre in Werribee. He will talk about the good work they are doing to support the homeless and destitute citizens of Wyndhanm and the many challenges the organisation is currently faced with.
He will be joined by Ass Pastor Tim Kite who works in the Outreach Ministry and is responsible for Salvos On Demand which operates the Food Van at Werribee Station on Friday evenings.
