Exciting times ahead for District 9800 Interact Clubs
District 9800 will continue its commitment to consolidate and grow Interact in both the Metropolitan and regional centres during 2021-22 with some exciting initiatives which will support existing sponsor clubs, encourage the introduction of new clubs and provide training and development for our Interact club members.
District 9800 is very proud of the achievements of its eight Interact clubs.  Like Rotary, they are experiencing difficult times during the current lockdown and many of their projects have stalled.
Whilst it is acknowledged that we are going through rather bleak times, we must remain positive and look forward to our Interact future as there will be a return to normalcy at some time in the future.
In the Rotary 2021-22 year, District 9800 has decided to increase its focus on Interact, and the other Youth arms of Rotary, such as Early Act and Rotaract. Therefore, a new “Acts” committee has been formed headed by Past District Governor Julie Mason under our Pathways to Rotary program. This committee is tasked with consolidating our current clubs and to encourage clubs throughout District 9800 to consider sponsoring new Early Act, Interact and Rotaract clubs, particularly in regional areas where we currently have nil or very few clubs.
In relation to Interact, our District has decided on a fresh approach and Des O’Shanassy from Hoppers Crossing and Jane Watters from Woodend will be the Interact coordinators for the District this year, with many new initiatives to be introduced to support existing clubs and to encourage new Interact clubs in Metropolitan Melbourne and in Regional areas.
Some of the planning includes encouraging all Interact members to participate in the third Multi District Interact Conference scheduled for early 2022, and participation in the District 9810 Interact District Assembly Attendance in December as our District clubs have now been invited by District 9810 to attend.
The third initiative will be the introduction of a new Interact District Council where leaders from each Interact club will meet key Rotarians on a semi regular basis to discuss issues, planning and special events.
A brief description of the proposed Council:
  1. To support all Interact Clubs of D9800 in their community service activities.
  1. To provide a means of communication and collaboration between all Interact clubs.
  1. To facilitate regular leadership training for Interact office bearers.
  1. To publicise Interact in the District and beyond its boundaries.
  1. To work in collaboration with the District’s Rotaractors in matters of mutual co-operation and to help to provide easy pathways from Interact to Rotaract.
  1. To foster the development of new Interact clubs in D9800.
  1. To encourage all Interact clubs to meaningfully connect with the wider world of Interact and Rotary International, especially on projects of mutual benefit.
  1. To facilitate co-operation and communication between other Victorian Interact clubs in the context of Multi-District conferences and allied activities.
  1. To maintain an accurate record of all Interact clubs in D9800 and to ensure that all contact information is updated with R.I. and D9800’s database.
Finally, in August commenced regular Zoom meetings with our eight sponsor club Interact liaison officers and their deputies, and reports on the activities of all Interact clubs will be reported to the District Leadership teams via the District Youth Committee. Easy to read templates on establishing an Interact club are being developed and will be added to the Youth Services section of our District 9800 website as soon as possible.
So, we now invite District 9800 Rotary clubs to seriously discuss the option of sponsoring your own Interact club during this Rotary year. For further information please contact the following:

THIS WEEK AT ROTARY - 26.10.2021

This weeks guest speakers on Zoom was our own Past President Peter Ross, who gave members a run down on his life.

Peter was born in Sydney.
He qualified as a Pharmacist in 1962. He needed a job, and was told to contact Hinton Lowe in Werribee, who might be able to help him. Hinton offered him a job, but Peter had to get directions from his home on Corryong to Werribee, as he had never heard of Werribee.

Werribee only had a population of a few thousand, and Peters was surprised about the religious divide between the Catholics and Protestants.

He married Elizabeth, who is also a Pharmacist, and has been in Werribee ever since. Peter received an AO for services to the community in 2019, which include
  • Werribee Rotary President 1986/1987
  • Has been a member of Werribee Rotary for 44 years on 1st November
  • Became Wyndham Councilor in 1993.
  • Mayor of City of Werribee 2004/2005
  • Board member at Manor Court Aged Care from 1982 to 2000
  • Been in Werribee Theatre Company for many years
  • Went to PNG on a Rotary FAIM Trip
  • Passion for Werribee River
  • One of the instigators in the Werribee Cultural Centre.

ALPHABET RACING - up to Sat 23.10.2021

As they round the turn into the back straight with 18 furlongs to go, Mr Sandlant has come from the clouds to join The Egg Man in the lead. He earned a mammoth 20 points for the two days of racing at the weekend including 13 points at The Valley to win the $15 weekly prize. But as he charges into the U to Z oblivion, has he hit the wall? Time will tell.

Some of the mares are really taking it up to the male horses. Running into some fine form is Lady Wade who gained a creditable 8 points in Race Meeting 7. She might be one to watch in the future. She's on the rails and travelling neck and neck with Rockin' Robyn who is just rolling along. Not far behind is another promising stayer in Anne of Green Grasses. After a slow start, she is slowly cutting her way through the field like a noisy ride-on mower in 3rd gear.

But the best of the female contingent is Demon Ann who is racing strongly in fourth spot just four lengths behind the leaders. Can Ann be the punters fan?

The points were much more evenly spread for Race Meeting 8 at Randwick where Vas O'Leen slipped forward and took the $15 honours with a measly 6 points. Nevertheless he is now looking in fine form with more to come.

Wendy Winx had a genuine chance of equine glory with 20 horses in her stable but she could only muster 5 points which leaves her well off the pace and with a lot of ground to make up.

At the rear of the field, the stragglers are dragging their hooves along. Yellow and Black can't take a trick and all he can see in front of him are the rear ends of the other 25 horses. Handy Andi is also struggling in her first attempt at the race. But she may surprise as the race unfolds.

And Rudolph Ballantino has finally decided to leave the safety of his barrier gate and has joined in the fun of the run. He's a long way behind but he's ready to put the foot to the floor and start cruising like a comfortable Commodore.

Fostering Children
Fostering Children

Martin speaks about the work of OzChild, a child welfare agency that supports children and young people in out-of-home care (kinship and foster care), and those children at risk of entering out-of-home care in the first place. What are the factors that place children at risk, how do we best support them, support families on the brink of fracturing, and what should be doing differently than was done in the past. Martin will speak about how we provide brighter tomorrows for children who have experienced vulnerabilities, and how can best support the volunteer carers who can make all the difference. Word of mouth about OzChild’s work is the greatest gift of all.

An educator at heart, with over 30 years experience in the education and not-for-profit sectors, Martin is committed to building productive partnerships that have kindness and generosity at their core, by pairing philanthropic intent with social purpose that tackles disadvantage.

Father of three and husband of one, Martin has worked in the NFP sector since 2012 in youth homelessness prevention and most recently supporting vulnerable children and young people in out-of-home situations with child welfare agency OzChild.

Prior to his jump into the NFP space, Martin spent 25 years working in the education sector, teaching, marketing, career counselling, project managing, tendering, business developing and managing high-performing teams. He spent four years broadcasting in community radio in Ballarat and volunteers regularly as an MC/stage manager at the Caloundra Music Festival. He’s even had fruit thrown at him while performing at the Myer Music Bowl! Living overseas in the 80’s, Martin delivered mail in the Australian High Commission, wrapped garden tools for the famous at Harrods, provided relaxation massage in Rhode Island and taught outdoor education in the forests of upstate New York.
