PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Presidents Message:

The 2021 Alphabet Cup is up and running with Rockin Robyn taking an early lead after scoring 10 points with the letter G.

Our guest speaker this week was: Libby Fifis, GM St Vincent’s Private Hospital, Werribee.

It was good to see members getting into the sprit of Hat Day by wearing a hat to our zoom meeting. The winner for the best hat was Andi Barnfield. Andi will be presented with a prize at our first face to face meeting after lockdown.

I urge all members to support the Lift the Lid on Mental Illness and the Rotary Walk with us campaign to help ericaite Polio.

Lift The Lid on Mental Illness

Rotary Walk with Us to End Polio

The Rotary Walk With Us campaign throughout October is a fun way to raise awareness and funds to End Polio Now.

Using Rotary’s friendly website (www.rotarywalkwithus.org), you can register to walk, set your distance and fundraising goals. Alternatively, you can donate to someone who is walking.

For the walkers the total distance you have set for the month is accumulated over the entire month of October. So, you can walk when, where and with whom you want in a COVID safe way.

Each walk is logged on the website along with all donations. It’s easy. Register to walk and donate at www.rotarywalkwithus.org

The District Conference for DG Dale Hoy’s year will be held from 30th April / 1st May 2022. It is planned that this will be an in – person District Conference in Regional Victoria but this will depend on restrictions at the time.

Please continue to keep in touch with members who do not attend our zoom meetings to make sure they are alright. It is also very important to check in on family members as well.

Next week’s guest speaker will be: Annette Butterworth, Presentation on Busy Feet Project and Catherine O’Connor, End Polio Now.

I will close with a thought for the week: “ I always like to look on the optimistic side of life, but I am realistic enough to know that life is a complex matter”.

Have a great week and above all stay safe.

Graham

THIS WEEK AT ROTARY - 05.10.2021

This weeks guest speaker on Zoom Libby Fifis - General Manager/Director Clinical Services - St Vincents Private Hospital Werribee. Libby has been in the role for a bot over 2 years. For those curious, Fifis is a French name.

St Vincents Werribee is part of the St Vincents Hospital Australia organisation, that comprises of 6 public hospitals, 20 residential aged care facilities, and 10 private hospitals. St Vincents Werribee opened in January 2018.

The hospital is a private hospital, which caters for patients who have private health cover. The hospital has been built to cater for the needs of Werribee for the next 20-30 years. When you enter the building, on the left hand side on the first floor, you will find the operating theatres. Six theatres have been built, but only three are fitted out and in use. The theatres are able to perform most surgeries, except those that require the patient to enter Intensive Care. These surgeries are done at Fitzroy.

On the right hand side of reception there is a three floor hospital. The first floor and half of the second floor are fitted out. The remaining areas will be fitted out as demand requires.

St Vincents Werribee do not deal with Covid cases. DHS determines which hospitals will be required to take Covid patients.

St Vincents Werribee have recently been told by the state government to reduce operating theatre procedures by 50%. A financial arrangement has been reached between DHS & St Vincents Werribee, to use the cancelled 50% of surgery space, to conduct surgeries for public hospital patients. This will free up space in the state public hospital system to deal with Covid patients.

ALPHABET RACING

The first race in the 2021 Alphabet Cup has been run and the old mare Rockin' Robyn has taken an emphatic lead after her 'G' horses earned her 10 big points and the $15 weekly prize.

She was out of the gates quickly and seems to have a air of determination to win this comp after a poor showing last year. Time will tell.

Other good performers with not-so-popular letters were Mad Dog Muir (K) with 7 points and Filthy Phil (E) with 6 points. That is surely a bonus and will put them in good stead as we continue through the race.

The luckiest performance on the day was from the recently-gelded The Egg Man who picked up all of his 5 points in the same race with the letter J. Very unusual. The snip obviously worked for him.

It was also a good day for the newcomer Demon Ann (Y) who collected 4 points. She's one to watch.

The biggest disappointments were Galloping Gail (S) and Mr Sandlant (M) who both collected a measly 3 points each despite having the most number of horses in their respective stables.

Eleven horses were left standing in the stalls. They just didn't seem to have the energy or the inclination to go forward. Maybe they're just saving themselves for better times ahead.

Tip of the week
Do you hate cleaning leaves out of your gutters? Buy some PVC pipe and fittings, and make a 'U" shape. Attach it to the end of your leaf blower, and you can clean your gutters from ground level and avoid climbing up ladders.

Annette is a member of the Rotary Club of Caroline Springs. She has been involved in the Busy Feet program for many years.

The BusyFeet dance program is designed for children aged 6 to 16 with a disability to give them a chance to explore their natural love of movement and music through dance. It is conducted in a fun, safe environment where everyone feels special and is respected for their individual ability and children receive one on one support.
