PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
President’s Message

On the Up and Up
It was in March last year that we had our last club meeting before going into full Covid-19 lockdown. Since then, the challenge for all Clubs was to keep Rotary moving along – and not go into hibernation.
On Jan 19th our Club meetings resumed at the ISCW. There is no doubt that Werribee Rotary is well and truly Back in Action!
Achieved so far: Facemasks Project, Picture sales, Charity Golf Day, Interact Club, Rypen Camp, Monday Bingo, Bunnings Christmas BBQ
… and coming soon: Breakfast Club, Rotary Centenary tree planting day, Mansion Fun Run

Making Australia a better place for everyone
At last night’s Club meeting we had a good attendance to hear a Zoom talk from our Guest Speaker, Shian Lee on ‘Émpowering others to change mindsets for the better’.
Shian recounted some of the challenging experiences he had faced from ‘old’ Australians and gave us strategies we can use when another person makes racist and sexist language comments.

As a lead-in to Shian’s talk, Colin Muir gave the Club an introductory presentation about Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. This is a major issue for Rotary, which District 9800 is encouraging Clubs to learn more about and take action on.

The themes of these two presentations complemented very well the national conversation, now underway, regarding the unequal treatment of females in Australian society.  The current challenge for Australia is to work towards achieving a fairer and more equal place in society for everyone.

Important Dates Coming Up
Sun Apr 11th    Yvonne Moon OAM Concert – 3-8pm at the Yarraville Club
Sat Apr 17th     Werribee Rotary Centenary Project – tree planting at Werribee Park
Mon Apr 19th   Breakfast Club resumes at Wyndham Park P.S.
Sat May 1-Sun 2nd    Rotary Multi District Conference

Enjoy the week ahead
Michael

THIS WEEK AT ROTARY

PDG Colin Muir did a short presentation on Diversity and Inclusion Awareness. This is part of D9800 focus to clubs, to make clubs more welcome and inclusive to everyone.

Some inclusion suggestions are:
  • Welcoming people at the door
  • Having a buddy system for new members
  • Listening
  • Look widely for new members
  • Make sure our membership represents the demographics of our community
  • Call out inappropriate behaviour
  • Don't make assumptions about peoples gender or sexuality.
The club will be holding a forum/discussion on this topic soon.

Tonights guest speaker on Zoom was Shian Lee, who is a Mindset & Relationship Coach.
Shian is an Asian migrant of about 25 years, who spoke on Empowering others to change their mindset for the better.

Shian provided us with some disturbing statistics.
  • During the last year 1 in 5 Australians suffered racial discrimination
  • 2 in 5 people living in Aust have been the target of racial abuse
  • Half of migrants have experienced racism in their life.
  • 7 in 10 teenagers have experienced racism
  • 3 in 4 indigenous Australians have regularly experienced racism

Raffle

WERRIBEE ROTARY GOLF DAY - 26th MARCH

Last Friday, Werribee Rotary held one of the most successful Golf Days we have had for a number of years.

Thanks to the magnificent work of Chief Organiser Ian Hovey, and the support of his team, a wonderful event was held. We haven't completed the final washup of the day, but at this point
  • Our revenue will be about $33,000
  • We had a full field of 130 players
  • We had about 146 at the lunch
  • The net proceeds of the day, that will be donated to Very Special Kids, will exceed $24,000
A special thanks to all of our sponsors, and in particular Bentons Plumbing, who provided a show bag of goodies for all the players.

Also to all our volunteers - we can't thank you enough.

Footy Tipping - Round 2
Round two must have been easy, as five tippers got 8 - Brian Ahmed, Liz Ross, Ross Conley, Tony Todaro and Daidie (who is it??)

Brian Ahmed won the $10 being 5 points from the correct score.

The leaderboard after 2 weeks is;
  • Brian Ahmed 14
  • Liz Ross 13
  • Ross Conley 13
  • Tony Todaro 13
  • Daidie ?? 13
  • Ian Hovey 13
Our two leaders Brian & Liz both follow Essendon, who have lost their first two games. Obviously no loyalty to their own team when tipping.

Also - if you haven't paid your $50, send it to the Treasurer ASAP.
