OUR MEETING 12th March 2024

From President Kim:

  • Thanks to Ross C, Ian H and the team who ran another very successful golf day last Friday. We look like we will make $24,500 profit, which will go to Prof Vasso for medical research at VU.
  • We had an unfortunate incident prior to Bingo last night. While setting up, an opportunist lady grabbed the bag containing the float of $1,250 and fled in a car that was waiting for her. The CCTV of the person and the car rego were great pictures, so VicPol won't have a problem making an arrest. It was a quiet night with 97 players and $800 profit. More wool was provided to the baby beany knitters.
  • The next Bunnings is Thursday 28 March, the day prior to Good Friday. Andi will be calling for volunteers in a few days.
  • Past President Graeme Hope from Rotary Club of Camberwell has been confirmed as District Governor of D9800 for 2026/2027.

Guest Speaker - Lee Szalnowski
John Holland Constructions
Construction Manager for Westgate Freeway - Western Section (Williamstown Rd to Kororoit Rd)

A fantastic talk was done by our speaker Lee.

Lee has been Construction Manager for John Holland, for the Western Section of the Westgate Project. The project is broken into three sections.
  1. Section one - Western Section - from Kororoit Road to Williamstown Road (not including tunnels)
  2. Section two - the tunnels from Westgate Freeway, under Yarraville to the Maribyrnong River
  3. Section three - East Zone - the raised road from the Maribyrnong River City Link.
Section one from the bridge to Kororoit Road, has been designed to limit or reduce lane changing. You will need to decide where you are going, and stay in those lanes, which will increase traffic flow.
The biggest challenge in building the Western Section, was the requirement that three west and three east lanes must remain open 24/7 during construction. The project was put on hold for nearly two years while the contaminated soil issue was resolves. The government insisted that the contractors would pay 100% of the remediation work, but the courts found the government was 100% responsible.
  • The total project cost is $10 billion
  • There will be 70 kilometres of new lanes, between Kororoit Rd & Wurundjeri Way
  • Up to 20 minutes travel time savings betweeN the city and Melbourne's west
  • 16% reduction in serious crashes
  • Improved signage and incident response
  • The old Westgate Freeway has been completely removed, and all materials were recycled and reused in the new freeway.
  • The West Zone is currently 96% complete. Many new lanes were opened on 8/3/2024.
Section two - Tunnels Under Yarraville
  • The west to east tunnel is 3 kilometres long, and the east to west tunnel is 4 kilometres long
  • The tunnels are only 18 metres below Yarraville
  • There are massive ventilation structures at each end to remove vehicle emissions
  • The tunnel boring machine used is the largest ever used in the southern hemisphere.
  • The tunnel boring machine head is 15 metres in diameter.
  • The tunnel boring machine is currently being dismantled & removed. The 15 metre drill head is too complex to remove, and will be 'left underground'
  • The Tunnel Zone is currently nearly 90% complete.
Section three - Eastern Zone
  • Includes the elevated road over Footscray Road.
  • Widening of Dynon Road & Wurundjeri Way
  • Separate bicycle paths for cyclists
  • Extending Wurundjeri Way north to Dynon Road
  • New road system between the shipping docks and the freeway
  • Rerouting of the rail lines in Footscray Road
  • Lots of new roads and bridges
  • There is a new pedestrian bridge near the old Observation Wheel, that is a scale replica of the Westgate Bridge
  • The East Zone is currently 75% complete.
  • The largest crane ever used in the Southern Hemisphere, a Demag CC8800 that can lift 1,600 tonnes was used to erect the elevated roadway & bridges.
THE BEST NEW OF ALL - THE PROJECT COMPLETION DATE IS OCTOBER 2025
