PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Presidents Message:

Races 2 and 3 of the 2021 Alphabet Cup have been completed with Colin Muir surging to a commanding lead  scoring 5 points with the letter L and following up with 8 points with the letter M.

Ian Hovey has again agreed to chair the organizing committee for the 2022 Werribee Rotary Golf Day.  This year was an amazing event and hopefully next years event will be just as good if not better.

Our guest speakers this week were Annette Butterworth who spoke about Busy Feet and Catherine “Kitty” O’Connor who gave a presentation on the End Polio Now Campaign.

October is Economic and Community Development Month

Rotary Walk with Us to End Polio

The Rotary Walk With Us campaign throughout October is a fun way to raise awareness and funds to End Polio Now.

Using Rotary’s friendly website (www.rotarywalkwithus.org), you can register to walk, set your distance and fundraising goals. Alternatively, you can donate to someone who is walking.

For the walkers the total distance you have set for the month is accumulated over the entire month of October. So, you can walk when, where and with whom you want in a COVID safe way.

Each walk is logged on the website along with all donations. It’s easy. Register to walk and donate at www.rotarywalkwithus.org

           Promotion for Rotary Leadership Institute

The Rotary Leadership Institute Program presents a wonderful opportunity for experienced Rotarians, new members and indeed people interested in finding out more about Rotary to take some time to experience the history, current and new initiatives related to this great organisation we call Rotary.

This four-part program is now available online.

Part 1 & 2: Growing and strengthening Clubs through developing a Plan for the future of your Club.

Looking at Rotary Leadership through examining the styles and characteristics of great leaders.

Becoming a confident Club President or another club leader through understanding the roles and responsibilities and characteristics of effective and happy teams.

Part 3:  Focussing and Increasing Humanitarian Service whilst learning more about The Avenues of Service and The Rotary Foundation.

Part 4: Enhancing Public Image and Awareness of Rotary and Sharing and promoting what we do

The next Rotary Leadership Institute will be conducted on the following dates:

Part 1 and 2 on Saturday 20 November at 11am and will run for one and a half hours.

Part 3 on Sunday 21 November at 11am for one hour

Part 4 on Sunday 28 November at 11am for one hour

To register you need to email Jane Pennington Jane.Pennington@rotary9800.org by Friday 13 November. There is a limit of 20 people for each program.

Please continue to keep in touch with members who do not attend our zoom meetings to make sure they are alright. It is also very important to check in on family members as well.

Next week’s guest speaker will be:  Elaine Robb CEO Encompass Community Services.

I will close with a thought for the week: “ You’re going to go through tough times -  That’s life. But I say, ‘Nothing happens to you, it happens for you.’ ’See the positive in negative even.

Graham

THIS WEEK AT ROTARY - 12.10.2021

This weeks guest speaker on Zoom was Dr Kitty O'Connor - District 9800 End Polio Chair.

Kitty gave us an update of the current situation with world polio.
  • We expected to be finished by now, but cases in Pakistan & Afghanistan have been proving difficult to eradicate.
  • The governments of Pakistan & Afghanistan are commited to continue the case of eradicating the disease.
  • Rotary is continuing with programs to educate & promote hygeine, which is responsible for the transmission of polio.
  • Polio is extremely aggressive, with a reproduction rate of around 5. This means a person contracting polio, will pass the infection onto 5 others.
  • We need to remove the last few cases in Pakistan& Afghanistan, and then maintain 3 years with no new infections, for the World to be declared Polio Free.
Our second guest speaker on Zoom was Annette Butterworth, speaking about the Busy Feet Project
Annette is a member of the Caroline Springs Rotary Club, and is a recent Melton Citizen of the Year.
RC of Melton commenced the Busy Feet project in Melton in 2014.
  • It is an after school project for children with disabilities.
  • It provides a dance & music experience for young people between 6 and 16.
  • Group activities have been found to be much more engaging for disability kids, than individual programs.
  • Lyn Fava, is looking to run a Busy Feet program in Williamstown, for children from the Western Suburbs.
  • It will be on a Tuesday at 3.45pm

ALPHABET RACING

He came in as a last-minute entry into the Alphabet Cup. Just before the time limit expired. And now Mad Dog Muir, despite many visits to the vet in recent times, has moved to the lead after completing Races 2 and 3 on Saturday. It was an effortless performance as he glided past last week's leader Rockin' Robyn who was going up and down on the one spot. He also grabbed the $15 prize at Randwick while the impressive Just Jess won the same money at Caulfield . She came from the clouds and left a number of slower horses in her wake. She has now settled on the fence in equal third place with Demon AnnRob the Boxer and Rockin' Robyn.

The Egg Man has moved into second place and is three lengths behind our new leader. He scrambled his opposition with two very consistent runs and seems very clucky about his chances of getting to the finish line first. He's no spring chicken but, as long as he doesn't fowl up, he might just achieve an eggs-cellent result.

Running side by side in fourth spot are a group of real contenders. They are Lady WadeMr Sandlant and the great Nothin' Like a Dane. Can they continue to push forward next week?

Filthy Phil didn't live up to expectations. He was sweating up in the yard and was a bit off his feed as a result of a BIG birthday celebration. He even had the best omen horse ever with his 'G' letter. It was called GOTTALUVTRUCKS but it crashed out on him.

Good to see a few more horses finally leave the barrier including Tosser RossVas O'LeenJumbo JimboFrisky Fava and Handy Andi who now looks ready to clean up.

Sadly, a few others are refusing to leave the stalls including the old stayers Rudolph Ballantino and Two Metre Peter while the stable mates Anne of Green Grasses and Randle's Candles are just standing around having a bit of a chat and not bothered that they are stone motherless last.

Encompass Community Services

Elaine has been the CEO of Encompass Community Services since 1995.

Encompass is a quiet achiever in the Geelong community. For over 30 years, they have been actively engaging with people with physical, intellectual, sensory and psychological disabilities; as well as other individuals who are disadvantaged such as disengaged youth, long-term unemployed and those facing financial, social or learning barriers. By working together with the community, they aim to end damaging stigmas and stereotypes; and open doors of opportunities for all people – whatever background, whatever ability.
