PRESIDENT'S REPORT

PRESIDENTS MESSAGE
After three weeks of the pressure of office, President Ian needed to take a week off with Micki to recharge the batteries.

President elect Kim stepped in, and did a great job, showing he is ready for 2023/2024.

President Ian sent Kim a powerpoint to play at the meeting, which revealed the truth of why he is not at Rotary - he is celebrating with the Cats.

Tonight we had Naberto Soares from Timor as our guest. Naberto is currently in Melbourne as the recipient of a Royce Abbey Scholarship, and will spend 3-4 weeks in Werribee studying farming and agricultural techniques. He will spend time at Lt Eggs with Brian Ahmed, and time in a number of Werribee farms. During his time in Werribee he is staying with Peter & Karen Sandlant.

Stand in President Kim reported :

  • That Past District Governor Lawerence Atley from RC Footscray had passed away.
  • Last night's Bingo had 103 players, and a profit of $1,700
  • Last weeks Bunnings BBQ was hectic from start to finish. We sold around 900 sausages, with a profit of around $2,500. Thank you to everyone who helped on the day.
  • Birthdays - Jess & Mary on 29th Sept.
  • Anniversaries - Rob & Lyn Fava, and Marg & Roland Wade
  • 15 years in the club - Graham Roper
  • Phillipines School Project - the money ($15,000) has been spent. Lori Rowe & Michael Redding are visiting Phillipines in November and will report back us on the project.
President elect Kim advised that the AGM will be held in about 6-8 weeks, and he is required to announce his Board for 2023/2024.

If you are interested in joining the Board for the year, speak to Kim ASAP.

If there is no one forthcoming, than Kim "will come knocking at your door" to find some volunteers.

Next weeks speaker (see below) is a world class expert on Breast Cancer Research. Friends and partners are welcome to join us.

NEXT WEEK

Tuesday 04th October

Professor Vasso Apostolopoulos is currently the Pro Vice-Chancellor, Research Partnerships at Victoria University, and a world expert in breast cancer research.

She received her PhD majoring in immunology in 1995 from the University of Melbourne, and the Advanced Certificate in Protein Crystallography from Birkbeck College, University of London.

Professor Vasso Apostolopoulos is a world-renowned researcher who has been recognised with over 100 awards for the outstanding results of her research. Most notable are the Premier’s Award for Medical Research, Young Australian of the Year (Vic), Greek Australian of the Year, Woman of the Year. She was named as one of the most successful Greeks abroad by the prestigious Times magazine.

Vasso was the first in the world to develop the concept of immunotherapy for cancer in the early 1990s, which today is used by hundreds of labs around the world. Immunotherapy aims to boost specific immune cells and program them to kill cancer cells; it was used by Vasso to develop the world’s first breast cancer vaccine with phase I, II and III clinical trials completed. Of note, one of the studies now has long-term follow-up data showing that 20 years later those injected with the vaccine remain cancer free. It has been licensed to an Australian pharmaceutical company.

We encourage partners and friends to join us to hear this world class speaker.

Alphabet Racing

As they head down the straight and approach the finish post for the first time, the fresh, fit and frisky filly Randle's Candles took it up to the veterans on the weekend and raced past them as if they were stuck in the mud. She has taken over the lead from Rockin' Robyn and, even though the race is young, she seems ready to sprint away.

One length behind her is the seasoned Barbie Q followed two lengths behind by Tosser Ross, The Egg Man and Just Jess who put the icing on the cake by winning $20 at Moonee Valley on Friday night.

Then comes Rockin' Robyn, Bend De Knees and Howling Dowling who used his S letter to great success on Saturday which won him the $20 prize.

After four race meetings, all horses are out of the stalls. After being left behind at the start, the last three stragglers Mr Sandlant, Garfield the Cat and Demon Ann are now on their way. Despite his lethargic start, the 2021 Cup holder, Mr Sandlant, has already overtaken half the field and looks determined to make it two in a row.

Sadly, one of the early favourites, Two Metre Peter, went backwards and is now bringing up the rear alongside a couple of other tortoises Mad Dog Muir, Killer Conley and Garfield the Cat. They all need to get a wriggle on.

OTHER BUSINESS

Covid Protocols from the Coronavirus Website

Influenza & Covid are both contagious respiratory illnesses. They both have similar symptoms, and you cannot tell the difference between the two by looking at the symptoms alone.

For the safety of all Rotary members, if you or a family member are sick or unwell, or have been in contact with somebody who has Covid, please follow extreme caution, and stay away from Rotary until your illness passes, or you have met Covid isolation protocols.

Covid is incredibly contagious, so lets err on the side of caution.
