The Facemasks Team Flies High!
Congratulations to Mary Macauley and the Facemasks Project team members for the great job they have been doing in making cloth facemasks. Mary reports that, of the first 350 masks made, 200 have been given to Uniting Care Wyndham and 150 to the Salvation Army Wyndham. These cloth masks will be distributed to people who might not otherwise be able to purchase them.
Mary also has 60+ additional cloth masks available. Please contact her if you would like some for yourself, family members or people you know. Thank you to Brian Ahmed, who has offered to take a supply to sell at Wyndham Cache, with proceeds to go into the Club’s Charity Account.
A First for the Interact Club at Wyndham Central College
Kim Deneys and Graham Roper provided an update on their weekly meeting with the Interact Club at Wyndham Central College.  Congratulations to the Interact Club members who are underway with their very first Interact Club Project! This involves making knitted blankets for the Salvation Army Wyndham to distribute to people in need.
This is a wonderful achievement for the students, given the huge disruption to schools caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Go to our Facebook page for more information about this Interact Club Project.
A Rotary Centenary Project for the Chirnside Cluster Clubs
I have emailed each of you with details of the Zoom link for the Chirnside Cluster meeting of on Wed, Sept 9th at 6.45 pm. The host is Wyndham Rotary Club and its President, Michael Lapina.
This Official Visit by District Governor Philip Archer will enable him to meet and speak with all of the five Wyndham Clubs and their members.
Each Club President will speak briefly about some of their Club’s achievements and activities.
As you know, my special interest is to see if the Cluster Clubs would like to work together on a combined Centenary Project to celebrate 100 years of Rotary in Australia & NZ.
Geoff Smith’s Induction as an Honorary Member
Our meeting on Sept 15th is an opportunity for the Club to recognize Geoff Smith and the wonderful contribution he has made as a member of Werribee Rotary since 1999.
Ross Smith will be Master of Ceremonies for the Testimonials and Roasts to Geoff. I know there will be many memorable stories to recount which involve Geoff Smith!!
Please let Ross know if you would like to be included in the Testimonials and Roasts segment of the evening.
Following on from this I will have the great pleasure of conducting an Honorary Member Induction Ceremony into Werribee Rotary Club for Geoff.
The second part of the evening will be a Trivia Quiz conducted by Ian Hovey.  This will be a salute to all those quizzes, competitions and activities organised over the years by Geoff!
Have a fulfilling week everyone. See you next Wednesday!
This Week on Zoom
This week on Zoom, our guest speaker was Glen Holland, A Director of the Werribee Open Range Zoo. Glen is Zimbabwe born, and grew up in South Africa. His passion is animal conservation.
Glen spent 12 years as CEO of the Auckland Zoo, then Adelaide Zoo, then 5 years as CEO of Healsville Sanctuary, and has been in his current role for 2 years.
In his role as Director of the Werribee Open Range Zoo, Glen has developed an $85 million capital works program for the Zoo over the next 8 years. Current Covid restrictions will be likely to delay the upgrade. 80% of the Zoo Revenue comes from gate entry, and this has neen Nil for the last 4 months. Currently there are around 500,000 visitors a year to the zoo, and this is predicted to grow to 1.5 million by 2030. The has 120 permanent staff & 80 casuals.
Stage One - Rhino Enclosure which has commenced and should be complete in 2021
Stage Two - The building of a Sky Safari. A 30 minute chairlift/gondola ride across the top of the zoo. It will be able to carry 1,000 people an hour including disabled & people with limited mobility. The aim is to start construction in 2022.
Stage Three - Waterhole, Cheetah, African Wild Dog & Cafe - To commence in 2024
Stage Four - A New 22 hectare Elephant Enclosure. All of the Melbourne Zoo elephants will be relocated. This stage will commence in 2026.

Cut Giggle & Sew
The girls have made 400 masks, of which 200 have been donated to Uniting Church Werribee, and 150 to the Salvation Army.
If you need masks contact Mary. Brian Ahmed will also out some up for sale in his shop.
The Interact club is meeting every Friday. Werribee Rotary is going to fund a pull up banner for the club. A survey of students was done which was very positive for Interact & will generate some new members.
The members have made two blankets, that Micki Hovey sewed together.
There will be an article in The Star on the interact club this week.
Werribee Football Club Charity Auction
One of the major fundraisers of the Werribee Football Club each year is their Charity Auction. Covid has wrecked those plans, but instead the club will be holding the event as an on-line auction.
There are hundred's of items that you can bid for.
Go onto the Werribee Football Club website to view the list of auction items. The auction commences on Friday 28.08.2020 and finishes on Saturday 12.09.2020. The highest bidders on 12.09.2020 'get the chocolates'.
Guest speakers
Everyone knows someone with an interesting story to tell. Pass them onto Ian Hovey so we can follow them up to speak to us on Zoom at a later date.
Rotary Zone 8 Conference
The Zone 8 Conference will be held over the weekend 19-20 September as a Zoom Conference.
There is a huge range of very good speakers, and you need to register.
