PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

President’s Message

A Wonderful Year’s End
It was a real pleasure for me to see everyone gathering together for our traditional Christmas Breakup.

There were lots of things to talk about In catching up with friends, after so many months in lockdown and with restrictions to our social gatherings.

Here’s hoping that 2021 will be a year where things continue opening up as we move into our new ’post Covid-19’ world.
I would also like the extend my special thanks, on behalf of myself and the Club, to Brian Ahmed and family for providing such a great evening for us at the splendid Wyndham Cache!

Our First Meetings for 2021
We are having an informal Social Get-together on Tues Jan 12th at the Bridge Hotel, Watton St.  Arrive about 6.30 pm for a chat and a meal. We will be in the large meeting room (where the Club used to meet several years ago). Partners and friends will be very welcome to attend.

Our first Werribee Rotary Meeting for the year will be on Tues, Jan 19th at the Italian Social Club from 6.30 pm.  It will be great to be back having proper meetings again in person!
At its meeting last week, the Board decided that the Club will continue meeting at the Italian Social Club during the whole of February. This will give members plenty of time to consider and discuss any future options for our meeting venue.

Fundraising Activities
We get underway with our first Bunnings BBQ since lockdown next Sunday Dec 20th. Let’s hope there will be lots of customers!

Thank you to everyone who is helping out during the day. My special thanks to Phil Purdy for rostering all the helpers and to Roly Wade for transporting the BBQ stuff before the start and at the end of the day.

Bingo starts again on Mon Jan 11th at the Italian Social Club. Brian Ahmed, with his team of Roly Wade and Rob Fava, will be liaising with the Bingo organisers.

Please help spread the message to people in the community that Bingo is back in action!

Best Wishes For The Festive Season
To you all I extend my very best wishes for a wonderful Christmas and New Year. I hope you are able to enjoy very special times with your families.

After a pretty eventful year personally, I am liking forward to spending the Christmas week with my family and grand-children in beautiful Bright!

Enjoy all your Celebrations Everyone!
Michael

Alphabet Racing - after meeting 22 - (4 weeks to go)

The horses are thundering down the straight towards the finish line and it's still anyone's cup.

And, just when we thought the leaders would cruise to the line, we have another new contender. She hasn't been seen since they jumped but now, after two withering runs over the weekend, the inaugural champ Galloping Gail may have galloped her way into equine glory. She has come from the clouds to collect 21 massive points and two lots of $15 after blitzing her rivals at The Valley and Flemington. She has now settled nicely into second place, two lengths behind a gasping Garfield the Cat. He is looking nervously over his shoulder in the knowledge that his nearest competitor is aiming to make it back-to-back wins in this famous race.

The most consistent performer, Jumbo Jimbo, is a further two lengths behind in third spot. He has been joined on the outside by Mad Dog Muir who has started to accelerate again after some indifferent runs. Can he grab a place in the race?

Filthy Phil is in fourth place but, after looking like the winner several weeks ago, he got his ambitions mixed up with his abilities and now seems to be going backwards. Beside him on the rails is Killer Conley who must have been disappointed with his performance on the weekend. After being a hot favourite with 20 runners at Flemington, he seemed to buckle under the pressure and only picked up 5 points. The rumour is that his convoy of horse floats may be headed for the glue factory on the way home.

Some other good runs of note were from The Egg Man (10 points), Randle of the Candle (8 points) and The Club (8 points) but they are too far from the front to feature in the final.

First – Garfield the Cat - 57 points
Second – Galloping Gail - 55 points
Equal Third – Jumbo Jimbo, and Mad Dog Muir - 53 points

Werribee Rotary Golf Day

As a result of the improved Covid outcomes, we have taken the decision to proceed with the organisation of our Annual Golf Day.

To 'buy us as much time as possible' we have put the date back to Friday 26th March.

This year we are going to run the event as a morning competition, with a light breakfast and lunch.

We will soon be looking for sponsors & golfers.

We are going to need plenty of volunteers on the day, so put the date in your diary now.

The registration form has been completed, and we expect invitations to go out prior to Christmas.

Guest Speakers
Everyone knows someone with an interesting story to tell. Pass them onto Ian Hovey so we can follow them up to speak to us on Zoom at a later date.

WERN
A special thanks to the volunteers who gave up their time on Monday 14th, to assist with the warehouse move at WERN.

There is a lot of truth in the saying "Many hands make light work", as we got far more done on the day than anyone expected. Some other clubs have working bees as well, and we expect the move to be complete by Friday night 18/12/2020.

Many thanks to those who attended - Ross & Ann Smith, Kim & Glenyce Deneys, Peter Sandlant, Peter & Liz Ross, Graham Roper, Ian Hovey & Ross Conley.

A huge thanks to all.

Tree Planting Day
We are working with the council, and expect to have a date for the tree planting in a few weeks.

Anne Randall
The club sends its deepest sympathy to Ann Randall, on the sudden and unexpected passing of her mother last Saturday.

Anne - all of our thoughts are with you.
