Welcome to the Corona Virus issue of the Werribee Rotary Bulletin
This Week - 17.03.2020
Eddie O'Farrell - Alcoholics Anonymous
Eddie is a reformed alcoholic, who gave us a very interesting talk on the Alcoholics Anonymous organisation, and his own personal journey. We also heard from other AA members Ray & Michelle about their personal experiences.
AA operates in 180 countries, and started in Aust in Sydney in 1940. In Australia there are 1800 AA groups, and 20,000 active members. In Victoria there are 435 AA meetings a week.
There is no definition of an alcoholic, and membership is equally spread between males & females.
There is no fee to join AA, just the desire to stay sober. AA is funded by outside donations, and does not receive government funding.
If you feel that your alcohol dependency is starting to get beyond your own control, then call AA on 1300 22 22 22.
Next week - 24.03.2020
There will be no meeting.
Pres Brian announced, that on the advice of RI & District 9800, that the Board had suspended all future meetings of Werribee Rotary, until the authorities deem it safe to recommence.
Our club has been further significantly impacted by the corona virus.
  • The Bendigo Rotary Conference from 27.03 has been cancelled.
  • Werribee Rotary was to provide breakfast at the Relay 4 Life on 15.03, but the event was cancelled.
  • Bunnings have cancelled all BBQ's at Hoppers Crossing.
  • Bingo at ISCW has been suspended.
  • Werriee Rotary will cease Board meetings, but consider non faceto face meetings via the internet.
Next Week - 24.03.2020
A few members miss there Rotary on Tuesday nights, and will be having a meal & a few drinks at the Commercial Hotel at 6.30 on 24.03.2020. Others are welcome but let Ross Smith know if you are coming, as we will need to book a table.
Editor - I feel Rotary have over reacted in recommending to clubs that meetings cease.
Sunday 03 May 2020
PP Ian Hovey has sent an email to members and partners, about an event on Sunday 03 May 2020, at the Wyndham Cultural Centre.
This event has been deferred, and will be rescheduled to a date later in the year.

Cut Giggle & Sew

The next meeting this Saturday the 21st March has been cancelled.

We will advise in due course, if the April, May & June meetings will proceed.

District Conference
Bendigo - March 27th to 29th.
The conference has been cancelled.
The organising committee have a lot of work to do, as a fair bit of money will have already been paid as deposits. Some money paid will not be able to be recovered.
Refunds might take a few months to be processed, and can't occur until the finances are finalised. District 9800 will have to underwrite the shortfall, and that might ultimately require a levy against all clubs.
Be patient. It is unlikely refunds will be made before June.
Rotary Golf Day - 27.02.2020
Congratulations to Ross Conley and his team, on another successful golf day. We made $17,500 which was a bit down on previous years,  but not surprising given the pressure on fundraising, following the bushfires. Many thanks to our sponsers, and Ballan Holden who provided a car for a hole in one on the 15th.
Thanks to the volunteers who assisted us. Lexie Smith, Jess Walker, Micki Hovey, Ian Knight, Roland Wade, Roman Koslovski, Jeff Garfield, Michael Redding, Geoff Smith, Lou Dowling, Ian Hovey, Lyn Slade, Mary Macaulay, Ann Smith, and Jim Randall.
The winners were:
  • First - Jim & Peter Hudson, Mark Salnitro & Troy Kerry
  • Second - Adrian & Ross Ferlazzo, Josh Duim, Antonio Garafalo
  • Third - Andrew Bethune, Jeff Dart, Ed Collis & Paul Cumper
Rotary Down Under Magazine Survey
The monthly magazine we get from Rotary, are conducting a survey to improve their performance. Take a few minutes to complete the survey.

There are a number of club activities & projects occurring over the next few months. It is important that members are kept informed, so I encourage board members to send me reports on activities that are taking place, and we can do a bulletin every couple of weeks.

IN BRIEF......
  • Bingo - only 50 players last night and a profit of $17. There will be no more bingo until the government ban on indoor gatherings is lifted.
  • Past President Gordon Eddy - 1981-82 passed away recently. Our thiughts are with Gordon's family. Check the papers for funeral arrangements.
  • AFL Tipping is still on - if you are going in the tipping contest, logon to and register, or speak to Ian Hovey. $50pp and family & friends welcome.
  • Joke -A polar bear cub comes home from school one day and asks his mother, “Mum, are you sure I'm a purebred polar bear? I'm not part grizzly bear or anything?"
She replies, "Of course you're 100 per cent polar bear. I'm a polar bear, your dad's a polar bear and you're a polar bear."
The next day after school, the bear cub asks his father, "Dad, am I a purebred polar bear? Are you sure I'm not part black bear or panda bear?"
His dad replies, "Son, my parents were polar bears, your mother's parents were polar bears, you're nothing but polar bear."
The next day, he comes home and asks both of his parents together, "Are you sure I'm not mixed with some other kind of bear?"
His mum replies, "Yes! You're a polar bear, we're all polar bears. Why do you keep asking us if you're a polar bear?"
    "Because I'm f**king freezing!"

President - Brian Ahmed
