PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

President’s Message

My grateful thanks to Vice President Colin Muir for chairing this week’s meeting.

Special thanks to Ian Hovey, who has been led the way in our Covid normal environment, running our Zoom meetings, Alphabet Racing etc.

The latest news on the Prez is:
He is in the Royal Melbourne Hospital, where he recently underwent a "quintuple bypass". This is the most intricate heart bypass surgery, as it involves all of the five arteries feeding the heart.

Michael has been in intensive care, but is expected to be moved to a ward on Tuesday 20th or Wednesday 21st. He is expected to remain in hospital for another 4-5 days, then he will move to Kensington with his daughter for his 4 or 5 week recovery.

With best wishes for the week ahead,
Michael

This Week on Zoom

This week on Zoom we had a presentation on Lift The Lid, by past District Governor Greg Ross. Lift The Lid is a project of Australian Rotary Health.

Greg Ross is a member and past president of North Balwyn Rotary. He was District 9800 Governor in 1991/1992. Greg is in his final year as Chair of Australian Rotary Health, a position he has held since 2013. Greg is a professional actor, best known for his role as Senior Detective Tony Benjamin, in the television series Cop Shop, in the late 1970's.

Australian Rotary Health (formerly Australian Rotary Health Research Fund) commenced 39 years ago, and is a program of the Australian Rotary Districts. It currently has an investment fund of $14 million, and its investment returns and new donations are used to fund its projects.

In the early 2000's, the organisation directed its efforts towards mental health. One million Australians experience some form of mental health. Of the 1 million, 50% will have experienced issues prior to turning 14, and 80% by the time they reached 25.

Australian Rotary Health provides funding into four focus areas.
  1. Mental Health Research - Mental Health Research Grants, Ian Scott Phd Scholarships, and Postdoctoral Fellowships
  2. General Health Research - Funding partner Phd scholarships, Research Companion Phd Scholarships and Postdoctoral Fellowships.
  3. Indigenous Health Scholarships
  4. Rural & Medical Nursing Scholarships.

Western Emergency Relief Network (WERN)
We thank Rob & Lynn Fava for a donation of a washing machine & a television. Also to Peter Sandlant for the donation of a mattress and a suitcase of bed blankets.

WERN does a weekly pickup from 4 or 5 hostels in and around the Melbourne CBD. Werribee Rotary have been asked to assist with pickups. Ross Smith will be doing a tour on Monday 26th to see what is involved.

Alphabet Racing - after week 5
After yesterday's Geelong Cup day, there have been some good moves from mid-field which has put pressure on the front runners.
Graham the Groper took full advantage of the 'S' horses and won the $15 weekly prize with 7 points. He now moves nicely into 5th position alongside the slow but steady Frothy Joffa. We saw another great show from Jumbo Jimbo who has been running 3 wide and now nestles into second place, just a length behind the leaders Hovecat and Barbarella.
Tosser Ross also gained good ground. He got an easy run along the rails and passes a group of horses who were caught napping.
The Club is in trouble at the end of the field and now has sole possession of last place after Pristine Christine decided to get going. With the letter 'M' in the next race, she now has to go on with it.
Equal First – Barbarella & Hoveycat 19 points
Second – Jumbo Jimbo 18 points
Third – Vas O’Leen 16 points
The Club is last with one point, and has "Z" next week
