PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

President's Message

There was no Tuesday meeting this week as a group of members and partners paid a visit to Very Special Kids in Malvern to present them with a cheque for $22, 000 from our recent Charity Golf Day. The cheque was presented to Sister Margaret with CEO Michael Wasley also in attendance. After the presentation and morning tea we ventured up the road to Giorgio’s Restaurant for lunch.

Monday’s bingo we had 82 in attendance and a profit of $785 was raised. Thank you to Tony Todaro and Kim Deneys for helping on the night.

Our next Bunnings BBQ will be on Thursday 19th May. I would like to thank all the members and friends of Rotary for volunteering on this day. Thank you to Ross Smith and Ian Hovey for picking up and dropping off all our equipment. Again, thank you to Andi for organizing the BBQ Roster.

Last Friday night I paid a visit to the food van run by the Salvation Army to present them with a cheque for $3,000. This money will be used to keep the food van running each Friday night. To see the homeless people and other citizens availing themselves of some hot food and drink was a very humbling experience. Pastor Tim Kite said a short prayer to thank the Werribee Rotary Club for their very generous donation.

I will close with a thought for the week: Stop saying I wish. Start saying I will.

Graham

THIS WEEK AT ROTARY - 18.05.2022

Visit to Very Special Kids
A group of 10 Rotarians & partners visited Very Special Kids, in Glenferrie Road, Malvern, to hand over a cheque for $22,000, which was the proceeds of the recent Rotary Golf Day.

We were met on arrival by the CEO Michael Wasley, and the founder & patron Sister Margaret Noone. We were given a presentation of VSK, which outlined the wonderful contribution of Sister Margaret Noone.

Sister Margaret was trained as an academic and undertook a 20 year career in teaching. Later in her career she moved into administration, and served for a number of years as a Junior School Principal. After being uncertain of what the future held, Margaret Noone took the decision to join the organisation Loreto Sisters. This organisation sends its Sisters into the big world, to study and explore how they can assist others where the need is the greatest. This usually results in long periods overseas.

While studying theology in Delaware USA, Sister Margaret had the opportunity to see how the American's treated children with terminal illnesses. On her return to Australia, Sister Margaret devoted her time to researching hospice for sick children. While there were specific services for children with a particular illness, there was nobody providing hospice support for children with any illness. With the support of her friend Paula Fox, she visited Victorian Premier Jeff Kennett seeking a building for free where she could start a hospice facility. After many months of negotiation, the current property in Glenferrie Rd was leased, and Very Special Kids commenced.

In 2000, Sister Margaret's wonderful work was recognised with an Order of Australia.

In August 2021, VSK obtained $7.5 million of federal funding, and construction commenced on a $16 million state of the art hospice facility, which is expected to be finished in about 12 months time. This will provide 24 hour a day specialist nursing care for around 900 families a year. The old facility was demolished, and the children are being temporarily relocated to Monash Health premises.
