This Week : International Night

Guest Speaker Jenny Foster

We relocated our meeting this week to Di Caprio's Restaurant in Hoppers Crossing, for our International Night.

Michael Redding and the International team, put a lot of work into the night, focusing on International Projects.

Jenny Foster, the District 9800 International Chairman was our guest speaker, and gave us an insight into some of the International Projects currently underway by clubs in D9800.

Jenny made special note of the achievements of the D9800 Donations In Kind store, which is sending containers of equipment overseas nearly every week.

We were briefed on projects in Solomon Islands, East Timor, Kiribattiti, Uganda, Kenya, Vietnam & Cambodia.

Some of these countries are so poor, that spending $100 is the equivalent of $1,000 spent in Australia.

Jenny encouraged members to consider supporting the Longest African Dinner from 6.00 - 9.00 on Friday 15.11.2019. It would be nice if the club can organise a table.

We welcomed a large number of partners and visitors to our meeting. A special mention to Past President Geoff Abbott & Bev.

The customary Rotary Raffle was held, with 20-30 prizes. The raffle proceeds will be used to fund club International Projects.

The St. Andrew's primary school will be holding its annual Parish Fair on Saturday 16th November and President Brian is keen for us to have a stall at the event. He says this is an opportunity for us to have a greater exposure with the greater community and to raise some funds at this well-established and popular family fair.

Rotary Youth Suicide Awareness Program
Rotary Youth Suicide Awareness Program

Youth suicide is the last taboo. In Australia, adolescents are the only group in the community whose health has not improved over the past thirty years, and youth suicide rates are now higher than deaths from road accidents across all age groups.

For nearly 20 years, Phil Wheatley, a member of the Rotary Club of Brighton North, has been a driving force in the Youth Suicide Awareness program and has spoken at countless Rotary club meetings spreading the message and obtaining support to sponsor people in regular contact with youth to undertake the Graduate Diploma in Adolescent Health.  Over that period there have been in excess of 135 scholarships awarded throughout the District and a total investment by 35 clubs in the District of in excess of $500,000 to such scholarships.
