Presidents Message
Happy New Year to you all. Let’s hope 2023 is a year filled with much good health and happiness and minimal stress for everyone.

It was good to catch up with members, partners and friends at Tino and Robyn Ballan’s place on Tuesday evening. They are such gracious and generous hosts and I thank them for helping to get the second half of the Rotary year off to a great start. There was a good vibe amongst the group of 40. They seemed to enjoy each other’s company and the wonderful food on offer.
While the night was very casual, I did take the opportunity to include some formality with a few announcements and presentations.

President Elect Kim Deneys announced his Board for the 2023-24 year. The only missing link in the chain is the naming of a President for 2024-25 but Kim is working hard to resolve this. We would love someone to step forward. If you have considered taking on the role but have a few doubts or reservations, why not have a chat with Kim?

For those who are familiar with the Alphabet Racing competition, I presented the Alphabet Cup for 2022 to the winner Alena Randall, whose horse, Randall’s Candles, was an emphatic winner of the prestigious event. The other presentation went to the last-placed Garfield the Cat whose owner, Jeff Garfield, received the Wooden Whip Award. It was a bit of fun throughout the year. To the contestants, I hope you got a kick out of it.

With Australia Day just around the corner, our Rotary cluster has exclusive rights to cook and sell bacon and egg rolls at the Wyndham Council’s Australia Day event next Thursday at Wyndham Park. I have called for helpers and my thanks to those who have responded. We now have about 6 people to help but we could do with a few more. They are estimating that 3000 to 5000 people will be attending. That sounds a bit ambitious but you never know. Please give me a call if you are able to assist.

Next Tuesday, we will be back at The Bridge for our normal meeting commencing at 6:45pm. We have been notified by their management that, due to inflation, the meal prices will increase from $20 to $23. They expressed their apologies for this but did not want to compromise on the quality of the food they serve.

The first guest speaker for the year will be our very own Michael Redding who has just returned from The Philippines and Vietnam on Rotary business. It will be great to hear about his venture, particularly in relation to the new school at the orphanage in Luzon, Philippines where we contributed funds to help fit out the facility with furniture and computer equipment.

On the subject of guest speakers, my thanks to Jerestene for taking on the role of Program Chairperson. It’s always difficult to find good speakers but Jerestene has willingly accepted the challenge and already has a few lined up. If you can help her by identifying potential speakers, she would really appreciate it.

Looking forward to seeing you at our meeting next Tuesday. Remember, partners and friends are very welcome.

President Ian

Next week at Rotary - Tuesday 24th January 2023

We are back at the Bridge Hotel for the first meeting for 2023.
As advised by Pres Ian, the Bridge Hotel have increased the meal price from $20.00 to $23.00. We have been expecting this for some time. As you would all be aware when you are in Woolies or Coles doing your weekly shop, the prices have increased by around 15% in the last six months. The Bridge has assured us that the quality of the meal will no be impacted.

We will continue with the $5 additional weekly charge, payable on arrival. This can be paid by cash or eftpos. The $5 covers, $1 for the card raffle, $2 for the guest speaker meal/drink, and $2 for the guest speaker gift.

OTHER BUSINESS

GOLF DAY  - FRIDAY 10TH MARCH.

Organisation for the Golf Day is proceeding well.

We currently have nearly 90% of the golf field booked in, and like last year we expect a full field of players.

We are still looking for sponsors and raffle prizes.

We will shortly be calling for volunteers to help us out on the day - we need about 12-15 volunteers for the day, to fill various roles, from between 7.30am & 1.30pm. Let Ross Conley know if you can help.

UNITING CHURCH WERRIBEE

President Ian advised members that the Board had approved a donation of $5,000 to Werribee Uniting Church, to purchase food packages for 150 families in Werribee who are is significant financial hardship.

BREAKFAST CLUB

Thank you to all the volunteers who participated in Breakfast Club during 2022.

Let Liz Ross know what your availability is for Term 1 - 2023

BINGO

The Bingo Roster is:

Jan 23 - Kim Deneys & Rob Fava

Jan 30 - Michael Redding & Colin Muir

Feb 6 - Kathryn Williams & Wendy Roper

Feb 13th - Paula Kudi & Mary Macaulay

Bingo last night 16/1/2023 - 106 players, and a profit of $1,400.

FIT4USE STORE

Commencing immediately we are going to change the trading name of the Fit4Use Store to the Werribee Rotary Opp Shop. We believe that Fit4Use is a bit misleading, and Opp Shop better describes our business. Flags and signage is being organised.

We have a lovely group of dedicated volunteers at the Opp Shop. But we could always do with a few more. If you know of someone who would like to help out as a regular volunteer or to be on standby for when people are unavailable, please contact Graham Roper on 0403 434 537.

International Convention

The Rotary International World Convention, will be held in Melbourne in May 2023. It is being organised by a committee formed from the Aust Rotary Districts.

The committee is also asking for interested Rotarians to register for the opportunity to home host several overseas guests for dinner during the convention. There is also an option for Rotary clubs to host a larger group of guests.
