PRESIDENTS MESSAGE

Hello everyone.

Thanks very much to president elect Kim, who got the late call up to fill in for me at this weeks meeting.

I have been diagnosed with Cellulitis in my leg, which will keep me laid up for quite a few more days, while the drugs work their magic.

Micki is doing a wonderful job, looking after me 24/7.

Pres Ian

THIS WEEK AT ROTARY

This weeks at Rotary, our guest speaker was Abdi Hassan.
Michael Redding heard Abdi speak at a RC of Flemington meeting, and got him to tell his story to us.

Somalia has essentially been made up of 'clans' for hundreds of years. These clans are usually family or ancestory based. The four major clans are Hawiye, Dirwein, Koofur Orsi and Darood. As there was no legal system in Somalia, all disputes were resolved by the clans, or by the 'law of the gun'.

Since 1997 when Somalia gained independance, Somalia has achieved recognition on the world stage. A transitional Ferderal Government was formed on the early 2000's, and was replaced on August 2012 by The Federal Government of Somalia. They have a seat at the United Nations and are recognised by many overseas countries. There is still an insurgency occuring in the South, who are not happy with the government. Sharia law is essentially the legal system of Somalia.

Abdi came to Australia in 1997, and now lives in Truganina with his wife & 4 children. He describes his arrival in Australia as a cultural shock. The climate was cold and he couldn't speak English, which made integration to Aust very difficult. He spent most of his time learning English and was able to get work. He studied at University and achieved a Master of Business. He was employed as a University lecturer from 2007 till 2016.

PE Kim sent the clubs best wishes to Pres Ian & Andi Barnfield who are on the sick list.
