This Week : International Night

Guest Speaker Lauerl Gore

This weeks guest speaker was Laurel Gore from Prisons Network.

Prison Network is a christian charity that works to support women in prison. They have 4 paid staff & 70 volunteers. There are 15 prisons in Victoria, of which 2 are for women.

Prison Network run self help programs for women prisoners. They focus on keeping engagement with children, and support programs to prepare women for life outside prison.

Unfortunately over 70% of women prisoners are from a background of abuse, which puts them into a downward cycle of crime. Prisons are a place of shame & hopelessness, and it is very difficult to break the cycle. Prison Network support children to cope with the stigma of visiting their mothers.

The quandary for everyone on the system is;

  • The negative long term impact of children being in prisons.
  • The relationship between mother & children
  • Children in prisons.

Congratulations to Michael Redding and the International Committee for a terrific night last week at Di Caprios.

President Brian encouraged other committee chairs, to organise a theme night at an external venue before the end of the Rotary year.

D9800 is running and end polio fundraiser on Thursday 24 October. Trains are coming to Melbourne from four different country regions, arriving around the same time.

Passengers will proceed to Federation Square for an event. The train from Werribee will leave at around 2.20pm.

The commercial TV channels will attend to ensure space on the evening news.

Kitty - President of Laverton Point Cook is our point of contact for those interested.

The St. Andrew's primary school will be holding its annual Parish Fair on Saturday 16th November and President Brian is keen for us to have a stall at the event. He says this is an opportunity for us to have a greater exposure with the greater community and to raise some funds at this well-established and popular family fair.

The Rotary Club of Central Melbourne is holding its 27th annual Rotary Foundation Paul Harris Breakfast on Thursday 21st November 2019 at the RACV City Club.

The guest speaker will be Dr Andrew Browning who has spent 17 years living with his family in Ethiopia amongst some of the poorest people in the world.

He specialises in treating a devastating birth injury called obstetric fistula.

Andrew is one of only a handful of surgeons in the world who have dedicated their lives to helping treat this problem. His charity has now built 3 maternity hospitals in Africa.

Tickets for the breakfast are $70 per person or $650 for a table of 10.

Alphabet Racing

They're off and racing in the 2019 Alphabet Racing Cup!

And the fillies have jumped well from the gates to take an early lead. Galloping Gail (10 points) is in front by a couple of lengths from Frisky Fava (8). They have left the geldings in their wake. But it's very early days in this long race.

Top weight, Groper (7), has settled in third but is three wide and will need to find the fence if he has any chance.

Then comes Flashy Phil (5) who has the tongue tied for the first time, followed by Ballantino (4) who is cruising along the rails like a well oiled Kingswood.

Killer Conley (3), who was heavily handicapped for this race, is running alongside Slow Moving Smith (3) who has just returned from a long spell.

Rotary Youth Suicide Awareness Program
Rotary Youth Suicide Awareness Program

Youth suicide is the last taboo. In Australia, adolescents are the only group in the community whose health has not improved over the past thirty years, and youth suicide rates are now higher than deaths from road accidents across all age groups.

For nearly 20 years, Phil Wheatley, a member of the Rotary Club of Brighton North, has been a driving force in the Youth Suicide Awareness program and has spoken at countless Rotary club meetings spreading the message and obtaining support to sponsor people in regular contact with youth to undertake the Graduate Diploma in Adolescent Health.  Over that period there have been in excess of 135 scholarships awarded throughout the District and a total investment by 35 clubs in the District of in excess of $500,000 to such scholarships.
