PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

President’s Message

Welcome Back To Rotary for 2021
On Tuesday the Club went back to the past in returning to the Bridge hotel for our start-of-year social gathering. Thanks to Graham Roper for booking us into the splendid old Dining Room (which the Club used several years ago for its weekly meetings). Graham was also able to arrange for us to order the meals bar prices - $20!

Bingo Gets Off To A Great Start
On Monday Brian Ahmed and Rob Fava were at the Italian Social Club for the restart of Bingo Nights.  There was a good attendance of players who were pleased to be back for the heads down!
The net proceeds from the opening night were $813 which will go the Club for supporting the Wyndham community.

Brian said it is possible, that with the closing of Monday Bingo at the Hoppers Crossing Centre, we could expect to see our Bingo numbers (and income) increasing.

Brian has arranged with Westwoods Real Estate to put up 3 billboards to publicise the Monday Bingo, while Rob Fava has organized promotion to go on Facebook (you can see this on the Club’s Facebook page. The Club is very grateful to Brian and Rob for their work.

Alphabet Racing Competition
During the evening Ian Hovey announced the results of the Alphabet Racing Competition. He presented a trophy and prizemoney to the Equal First place winners: Jeff Garfield and Werribee Rotary. The third place winner was Colin Muir.

This is the second year that Ian has conducted Alphabet Racing. Well done Ian! We hope you may be able to continue with a third season in 2021!

Club Dinner Meetings Restart
Next Tuesday Jan 19th we are back to the Italian Social Club at 6.30 pm for first official meeting together since March 2020, when Australia went into Covid-19 lockdown.

The venue will operate in accordance with all Govt Covid-Safe requirements.

I encourage EACH OF OUR MEMBERS to join us next Tuesday.
Now that it is safe to do so, it would be wonderful for our members to meet up again in person, after being separated from each other for the past 9 months.

Regards

Michael

Alphabet Racing

Many thanks to Ian Hovey for running the very successful second edition of Alphabet Racing. I'm a certain starter for Alphabet 3, as I have run second & third last in my two attempts.

After 26 weeks of racing, where we had about 15 leaders, it all came down to the very last race meeting at Caulfield. After picking up a winner on the last day, Garfield the Cat & The Club ended up tied on 65 points.

Mad Dog Muir finished 3rd on 64 points, followed by Steady Reading, Jumbo Jimbo & Galloping Gail.

Joint winners Garfield the Cat & The Club (represented by Pres Michael) & 3rd place Mad Dog Muir.

Birthdays & Anniversaries

Only one club anniversary, as President Michael celebrates 5 years as a member on 12.01.2021.

==================================================================

Next Week
Next week 19/1/2021 we return to ISCW for our first meeting for about 6-8 months.

At the meeting we will be developing plans for the Australia Day Celebrations.

The Chirnside Cluster of 5 Clubs (Hoppers Crossing, Laverton-Point Cook, Werribee, Wyndham, Wyndham Harbour) has received a grant of $18,000 from the Australia Day Council to promote community celebrations on Australia Day.

This grant was applied for by Michael Lapina (Pres. Wyndham Rotary) and it was awarded to the Cluster just before Christmas. Michael is co-ordinating the grant and has arranged additional Zoom Cluster meetings.

The Cluster Clubs have a very short time-frame to provide Community activities for Jan 26th.

Wyndham Council has been keen to support us and has said we can use three of the Councils  Pop-Up Parks and they will provide marques with trestle tables and power. The Council said that the activities need to run from 11 am to 3 pm (4 hours).
The Pop-Up Parks are located at:
  • Point Cook Shopping Centre
  • Soho Shopping Centre (cnr Sneydes Rd & Malibu St)
  • Wyndham Harbour Jetty
The grant money can be used to employ face-painters, entertainers, musicians, and singers.

The Cluster is planning to provide 1,000 Show Bags to hand out to children, containing goodies for the children while promoting Rotary, Australia Day and the Cluster Clubs.

The Cluster aims for several members from each Club to be on duty at each of the 3 parks throughout the day. The role of each Rotarian will be to provide general supervision, hand out show bags from the marquee, answer questions from interested adults about Rotary and provide information about their own Club in particular. This will be a wonderful opportunity to promote membership.

Werribee Rotary will need to have about 12 members available on Australia Day, with up to 4 people at each Pop-Up Park.  Wear your Rotary caps and tops to identify yourself as a Werribee Rotarian.

Our Cluster reps include myself (as Pres), Graeme Roper (Pres elect) and Colin Muir (Vice Pres).

Werribee Rotary Golf Day

As a result of the improved Covid outcomes, we have taken the decision to proceed with the organisation of our Annual Golf Day.

To 'buy us as much time as possible' we have put the date back to Friday 26th March.

This year we are going to run the event as a morning competition, with a light breakfast and lunch.

We will soon be looking for sponsors & golfers.

We are going to need plenty of volunteers on the day, so put the date in your diary now.

The registration form has been completed, and we expect invitations to go out prior to Christmas.

Other Business

Ian Knight
PDG Ian Knight has had a bit of a rough trot lately, spending the best part of 4 weeks in hospital, returning home on Thursday 7th.
Ian was scheduled for a knee replacement prior to Christmas, but other medical issues caused its postponement. Severe back pain has impacted Ian's mobility & he is currently unable to walk.
He has has appointments with physio, GP & specialists recently, to get to the bottom of why he cannot weight bear or walk.
Good luck Ian - we are all thinking of you.

Guest Speakers
Everyone knows someone with an interesting story to tell. Pass them onto Ian Hovey so we can follow them up to speak to us on Zoom at a later date.

WERN
WERN has now completed the move to new premises in Rockfield Way, Ravenhall. Thanks to Werribee Rotary members who assisted with the move on 14 December.

WERN reopens for business on 19/1/2021.

Congratulations to Robert Fava who has joined the WERN Board as Company Secretary.
