There are more than 100 different types of arthritis, but the most common 7 or 8 types account for more than 90% of cases. Many types are quite rare.

The most common types are:
Osteoarthritis
Is the most common form of arthritis. Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint condition. It causes pain, swelling & stiffness, and affects a persons ability to move freely. It is most common in knees, hips, spines & hands.
Contributing factors are : history of joint injury or overuse, old age, and being overweight. It impacts more women than men.

Rheumatoid Arthritis
Rheumatoid Arthritis is an auto-immune, where the body attacks itself. It is a chronic disease, that causes inflammation around the body, and presents as pain in the joints.

The causes of RA are unknown. The risk factors are smoking, obesity and exposure to air pollution.

Childhood or Juvenile Arthritis (JIA)
Is an inflammatory condition, that affects children under 16 years old.
JIA can be mild or severe, and can last months or years. About half of children grow out of it by the time they turn 16.

Lupus Arthritis

Is a type of inflammatory arthritis, where the body is attacking the skin or the joints.

Gout
A form of arthritis which affects the extremities, usually the feet. Most cases affect the big toe only and not the other toes.

For hundreds of years, gout was called kings disease, as it was associated with the lavish consumption of  expensive food types and alcohol. it is caused by excess levels of uric acid.

Ankylosing Spondylitis
Usually occurs in the spine & large joints
