OUR MEETING 26th March 2024
From President Kim:
- Ian Knight has had some more health issues, and spent some time in hospital. he is back home and they are doing more tests. Get well Ian.
- Bingo last night was an improvement with 116 players and a profit of $1,650. We increased the prizemoney this week, and the feedback was good. The players voted to 'play' next week on Easter Monday.
- The next Bunnings BBQ is Thursday 28th March, the day before Good Friday. Pres Kim advised that there was too many roster spots unfilled, and there was no option other than to call off the BBQ. Our next two BBQ's are Thurs 18th April & Sat 18th May.
- The Interact Club is going well. The club are packing boxes of books to send to the Philippines Orphanage. The club are also going to fundraise to sponsor a Story Dog.
Golf Day Proceeds to Vic Uni.
President Kim and Golf Day Guru Ross Conley, presented Professor Vasso with a cheque for $25,000 from the proceeds of the Golf Day.
Prof Vasso thanked the club, and advised that she is still thinking of how she will use the $25,000.She will let us know when she is back for her next talk.
Guest Speaker - Professor Vasso - Arthritis
There are more than 100 different types of arthritis, but the most common 7 or 8 types account for more than 90% of cases. Many types are quite rare.
The most common types are:
Osteoarthritis
Is the most common form of arthritis. Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint condition. It causes pain, swelling & stiffness, and affects a persons ability to move freely. It is most common in knees, hips, spines & hands.
Contributing factors are : history of joint injury or overuse, old age, and being overweight. It impacts more women than men.
Rheumatoid Arthritis
Rheumatoid Arthritis is an auto-immune, where the body attacks itself. It is a chronic disease, that causes inflammation around the body, and presents as pain in the joints.
The causes of RA are unknown. The risk factors are smoking, obesity and exposure to air pollution.
Childhood or Juvenile Arthritis (JIA)
Is an inflammatory condition, that affects children under 16 years old.
JIA can be mild or severe, and can last months or years. About half of children grow out of it by the time they turn 16.
Lupus Arthritis
Lupus is an auto-immune condition, where the body attacks its own organs. More than 90% of patients experience joint soreness and pain.
Psoriatic Arthritis
Is a type of inflammatory arthritis, where the body is attacking the skin or the joints.
Gout
A form of arthritis which affects the extremities, usually the feet. Most cases affect the big toe only and not the other toes.
For hundreds of years, gout was called kings disease, as it was associated with the lavish consumption of expensive food types and alcohol. it is caused by excess levels of uric acid.
Ankylosing Spondylitis
Usually occurs in the spine & large joints
Reactive Arthritis
Joint pain and swelling, triggered by an infection in another part of the body.
