Vocational Visit to Mainstream Aquaculture - 73 Lock Ave, Werribee
Half of the club members undertook an extremely impressive tour of Mainstream Aquaculture. The organisation produces 90% of the Barramundi consumed in Australia, from their factory in Werribee.
Werribee was chosen as their is an aquafer 100 metres below the surface, that contains warm semi salty water which is perfect for producing Barramundi.
We toured the hatchery where 50 or so huge 1 meter barramundi, produce an unlimited supply of eggs. These are grown to fingerling size, then moved into the eight large tanks where they are fed, prior to being harvested about 7-9 months later, when they reach dinner plate size - 1/2 to 1 kg.
Each of the eight big tanks you see in the pictures, hold about 90,000 fish.
The business turns over about $30 million, and is currently building a new plant in Arizona USA
