Presidents Message
We held our first official meeting for 2023 at The Bridge on Tuesday. For those who attended, it was good to see them in good spirits but sadly the numbers were a bit disappointing.

Our guest speaker was Michael Redding who told us all about his recent visit to The Philippines, with Lorry Rowe, to participate in the Orphanage Classroom Project Completion Ceremony. He spoke with passion and pride about the new school and, in particular, the furniture and computer equipment which was funded by our club with help from a District grant. I also felt a sense of pride that we had made such a difference to this community by giving the children the best opportunity to receive some quality education. Thanks Michael for your presentation and for flying our flag so diplomatically.

Michael also talked in glowing terms about the local Filipino Rotary club, Cabanatuan City, who made him and Lorry feel so welcome. We have established a sister-club relationship with this club and, as it happens, one of their members, PP Ric Vilda, is visiting Melbourne next week. Ric and his wife and several members of his family will be guests of the club and Ric will address our meeting. It would be great if you and your partner could come along to meet them.

Speaking of Michael, he celebrated his 80th birthday a few days. But as Michael would say, it’s just a number, and we know that it won’t slow him down. We wish you a belated happy birthday Michael. Also Anne Randall has a 'big one' on 26 Jan. Happy 40th birthday Anne?

Congratulations to Graham Roper who has been called to higher Rotary duties. He has accepted the role of Assistant Governor for the Hobson’s Bay Cluster in 2023-24. We hope it's a great experience for you Graham and that it doesn’t interfere with your golfing endeavours.

Last week’s Bunnings BBQ reaped more rewards that I expected. We made a profit of $700 thanks to the efforts of Peter Ross, Kim and Glenyce Deneys, Peter Standring, Phil and Barb Purdy, Graham Roper, Anne Randall and Jane Flynn.

The Australia Day community event is happening at Wyndham Park on Thursday and our Rotary cluster will cook, serve and sell bacon and egg rolls to the masses. I will report on the outcome of this event next week.

Pres Ian

THIS WEEK AT ROTARY

Our guest speaker this week was Past President Michael Redding, who spoke about his trip in November 2022 to Philippines.

Michael & Lori Rowe visited the Rotary Club of Cabanatuan City, who was the partner club in the project to provide furniture, computers and classroom equipment to The Bahay Ni San Jose Orphanage School.

Michael & Lori were welcomed to a club meeting, where a sister club agreement was signed.

RC of Cabanatuan City used their contacts to help with sourcing the equipment needed at good prices. We had money left over which we used to purchase cooling fans, blackboards, and other classroom equipment.

On Sat November 12th, the school, Rotary Club and Inner Wheel Club held a project completion ceremony, to officially close the project. All of the equipment supplied had a label attached recognising the Rotary Foundation and the two Rotary Clubs.

Next week at Rotary - Tuesday 31st January 2023

Next week we will have two guest speakers.

  1. Ric Vilda - Member of the Cabanatuan City Rotary Club. Ric & his wife Jessica will visit our club. Ric's son John Ross and his wife & mother live in Lalor, and have also been invited to the meeting.
  2. Our own Nusrat Islam will also speak at the meeting. We recently provided $2,000 to a group associated with Nusrat, to allow ten Indian Business Ladies to attend a conference to promote excellence.

OTHER BUSINESS

GOLF DAY  - FRIDAY 10TH MARCH.

Organisation for the Golf Day is proceeding well.

We currently have 118 players registered, and only have space for another 10 players.

We are still looking for sponsors and raffle prizes.

We will shortly be calling for volunteers to help us out on the day - we need about 12-15 volunteers for the day, to fill various roles, from between 7.30am & 1.30pm. Let Ross Conley know if you can help.

AUSTRALIA DAY BREAKFAST

The Chirnside Cluster will be be selling bacon & egg rolls at a City of Wyndham Aust Day function at Wyndham Park on the morning of 26 January.

The organisers are expecting 5,000 people to attend, but there has been no promotion whatsoever, so we are hoping the day is not a disaster, and result in us having lots of unsold food.

Brian Ahmed is donating the eggs. Many thanks Brian.

Mercy Health FoundationTrivia Night

The Mercy Health Foundation is holding a Trivia Night on Friday 24 February at 7.00pm...... as a fundraiser.

It would be nice if our club could put a table together. Speak to Brian Ahmed if you can attend.

Let Liz Ross know what your availability is for Term 1 - 2023

BINGO

The Bingo Roster is:

Jan 30 - Michael Redding & Colin Muir

Feb 6 - Kathryn Williams & Wendy Roper

Feb 13th - Paula Kudi & Mary Macaulay

Bingo last night 23/1/2023 - 111 players, and a profit of $1,850.

FIT4USE STORE

Commencing immediately we are going to change the trading name of the Fit4Use Store to the Werribee Rotary Opp Shop. We believe that Fit4Use is a bit misleading, and Opp Shop better describes our business. Flags and signage is being organised.

We have a lovely group of dedicated volunteers at the Opp Shop. But we could always do with a few more. If you know of someone who would like to help out as a regular volunteer or to be on standby for when people are unavailable, please contact Graham Roper on 0403 437 349.

Bunnings BBQ

The next Bunnings BBQ is Thursday 23 February.

It would be nice for a few other members to put their hand up, and not just leave it to the same 8 or 9 people.

International Convention

The Rotary International World Convention, will be held in Melbourne in May 2023. It is being organised by a committee formed from the Aust Rotary Districts.

Click this link to view the flyer.

The committee is also asking for interested Rotarians to register for the opportunity to home host several overseas guests for dinner during the convention. There is also an option for Rotary clubs to host a larger group of guests.
