PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
President’s Message

Think Big, Think Laterally, Think Community ..Think Rotary!
This week PP Brian Ahmed outlined his projections for the ongoing weekly income that we will be receiving from Bingo. He expects that this should contribute over $50,000 annually to the Club.

I would like each of you to think about ways in which our Club could provide worthwhile support for individuals, communities and organisations during 2021 and the years to follow.

Here are some of my initial thoughts which come to mind:

  • a significant Rotary community installation (in Rotary’s Centenary year) – drinking fountains in Watton St?  a Clock Tower? more playground equipment in Wyndham Park?  etc.
(In previous years Werribee Rotary has built the Civic Centre Japanese Garden, was closely associated with developing the Station Place Parkland and paved the Comben Drive inscribed brick footpath.)
  • personal growth of individuals – school education bursaries? RYPEN, RYLA, National Youth Science Forum, Apprenticeship Scholarships   etc.
  • new community groups in Wyndham – Sudanese?  Karen (northern Myanmar)?   etc
  • needy individuals and families – mental health of young people? Beyond Blue Cup? single parents with children? homeless people? sports clothing for children from poor families?  etc
  • WERN and DIK – contributing funds for the new WERN warehouse to be built in Ravenhall? funding a shipping container for DIK?   etc.
  • overseas projects – Vanuatu school project? Days for Girls (in South Sudan? Uganda?) etc.

Guest Speakers on ZOOM
Thanks to our tech wiz Ian Hovey for setting up this week’s Zoom talk by Harry Moffitt on ’11 Bats’.

We heard a great account of Harry’s experiences in the SAS and the significance of the eleven bats - which were actually 12 bats!

Next week I have invited Chris & Sarah Ochaya to join us on Zoom from northern Uganda.  As an honorary member of Werribee Rotary, Chris will be able to update us about the work he has been doing in Gulu since the last report we had.

THIS WEEK AT ROTARY

This week at Rotary, we had a wonderful presentation Anthony "Harry" Moffit, a recently retired SAS officer. It was disappointing that our attendance was so poor for such a wonderful speaker.

In a first for Werribee Rotary, Ian Hovey was able to present the speaker by Zoom, which allowed PDG Ian Knight to dial in.

Harry joined the regular army in 1986, and immediately directed his focus towards passing the grueling two year training & selection process for the SAS. His two years training took place in Perth WA. The training was grueling, and Harry is pleased that some European countries have recently trained female SAS personal.

Shortly after being accepted into the SAS, Harry left Australia for the first of eleven overseas active deployments.  These included Iraq, Afghanistan and the middle east. He was wounded in one of his deployments, and had many 'close calls".

On his first deployment, Harry, a keen cricket follower, took a cricket bat and some balls. Harry saw the pressure soldiers were under, and encouraged soldiers to 'have a game of cricket' when soldiers were resting. He quickly saw the wonderful healing power cricket had on soldiers.

Harry took a new cricket bat on each of his deployments, which were signed by soldiers, generals, politicians etc. His collection of 11 cricket bats are currently doing a 'tour of RSL Clubs.

Harry has written a book called 11 Bats, detailing his time in the SAS. The book costs $22 from Amazon, and a bit more through Dymocks, Booktopia and online.
