This Week - 26.05.2020
This weeks guest speaker at our Zoom meeting was local Werribee Doctor Joe Garra. Joe was superbly introduced by Chairman Ross Smith.
Dr Joe works for the My Clinic group, who has 12 clinics across the metropolitan area. Joe is the nominated Covid 19 representative for the My Clinic Group, and part of his role is to keep the My Clinic doctors update on issues, and medical requirements for Covid 19.
It was refreshing to hear about Covid 19 from a medical point of view, rather than the daily lectures from the politicians.
The main points from Dr Joe's presentation were:
- Those most susceptible to getting Covid 19 are, Males (2/3 rds are males), Those over 70, the overweight, those with diabetes.
- In the United Kingdom non whites are testing positive nearly double the white population.
- Children under 18, comprise less than 2% of cases.
- Golf courses, playgrounds, beaches and outdoor areas are extremely low risk. All identified cases have occurred indoors.
- Australia has done so well mainly due to population density. The highest recorded cases are in New York, Italy and Brazil, which have population densities 10 to 20 times greater than Aust.
- There is no medical evidence for states keeping the borders closed. This is politics 101.
- Some outbreaks are named straight away, but some are kept anonymous. This is political.
- Easing restrictions based on numbers per venue (20 on 01.06.2020)makes no sense. The numbers in cafes & restaurants should be based on the size of the venue with 4 squ mt per person.
- Schools should have opened earlier as they are very low risk.
- The phone app will become more important when large numbers start using public transport.
- Masks should be used on public transport.

WERN (Western Emergency Relief Network)
Ross Smith & Joe Cumbo will be doing a furniture pickup from Southbank on Friday 29.05.2020.
One of the major donors to WERN is the Koala Mattress business. They sell their mattresses with a 90 day return, and as they are second hand they obviously cant be resold.
Koala has just relocated to Dandenong, so there will be a requirement on most Mondays to travel to Dandenong in the WERN truck and pick up 6-10 mattresses.
Werribee Rotary have put their hand up to do the pickup each Monday. We will need 2 people for about 4-5 hours. If you can assist once a month or something like that, can you register your interest with Ross Smith.
