Werribee River

PRESIDENTS REPORT

Last Wednesday, nine members and partners were privileged to attend a meeting at the Rotary Club of Wyndham where we heard from Brian and Doug who had turned their lives around with the help of RecLink. When they spoke about their journeys through life, specifically in relation to things like alcohol, drugs, homelessness, mental illness and violence, you could hear a pin drop.
Fortunately, for these two speakers, they had come through the other side and are now solid citizens and are doing wonderful work for their communities and for other disadvantaged people. It was a heartfelt story.
The key person behind RecLink is Peter Cullen who was born and bred in Werribee. The formation of RecLink was based around the use of sport, particularly football, as a means of helping to overcoming significant adversity. Peter’s mantra is to “include the un-included”.
As part of the evening, Peter launched his new book called “The Power of a Football” which is a series of short stories told by people who have been through troubled times. Many of them are back on track thanks to the support of RecLink.

We viewed this video before Doug and Brian spoke of their journeys.
We are saddened to hear of the passing of Darcy Hepburn, son of Veronica and Ron. Ron was a wonderful member of the club and his sudden passing in the mid-2000’s was a great loss to our club and the community.  Our hearts go out to Veronica and her daughter Melissa and family. We are thinking of them during this sad time.
You might be interested to know that, while our membership numbers are at an all-time low, we are excited by the fact that a number of potential new members have indicated their interest in joining. We will process these applications as quickly as possible. Let’s hope that this is the start of something really good for our club.
Next week’s meeting will be quite a busy one. It will be our AGM which, if things go to plan, will be short and sweet. We will also hear from one of the students from Gordon TAFE who was awarded one of two scholarships that we donated. The keynote speaker will be Edward Wallace who is the Director of Perioperative Services at the Mercy Hospital. We will be handing over some more baby beanies to Edward.

Alphabet Racing

Tiny Tim may have tiptoed through the tulips but, on the weekend, Two Metre Peter thundered through the thoroughbreds on his way towards the front of the field. The long-legged limousine gained a big batch of 20 points at both race meetings including 12 at Ballarat which won him the $20 prize. He now sits in fourth place just behind his stablemate Dizzie LizzieMr Sandlant is just a few lengths ahead after another mighty day at Kembla Grange where he picked up his third prize of $20 in the 2022 Alphabet Cup.

While the leader Randall's Candles is resting up before the run home, she must be getting a little sweaty on her flanks as the gap between first and second narrows. She knows they are coming. Does she have enough gas left in the tank to greet the judge before anyone else?

There were a couple of other good performances including the trio of fillies, Kathryn the GreatWho Dat Nusrat and Wendy Winx. You could also hear the dogs barking for Jumbo Jimbo and Killer Conley.

But with only 4 race meetings to go, Kathryn the Great, Bend De Knees, Rockin' Robyn and Sticky Micki are the only ones in serious contention to grab a piece of the prize money. The others have little chance. As they gasp for air to fill their lungs, their thoughts have already turned to green grasses and plush pastures.

OTHER BUSINESS

Guest Speakers

Everyone knows someone with an interesting story to tell. Please pass their details on to Jess so we can follow them up to speak to us in person or on Zoom at a later date.

BABY BEANIES

We are about to purchase many balls of knitting yarn to be made into baby beanies for the Werribee Mercy Hospital. This is a call out to anyone who might like to assist in knitting the beanies. Apparently, they are quick and easy to knit. A knitting or crochet pattern is available. If you or someone you know would like to assist, please send an email to Micki Hovey.
