PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
President’s Message

Lou Dowling Is Leaving Us
Lou has now relocated to his Lorne home to live. In his changed circumstances, Lou has indicated he will be unable to be a regular attendee at Club meetings and activities and has decided conclude his membership of the Club.
It was with great regret that the Board received Lou’s letter of resignation at its meeting last week.

Great Progress with the Charity Golf Day and Monday Bingo!
Ian Hovey said the Charity Golf Day team originally had set a target to raise $20,000 - and have already reached $19,500!  With over 4 weeks remaining before the BIG DAY on March 26, Ian is hoping for more golfers to enter and for some additional Company supporters to come on board. He believes that Very Special Kids may benefit even more than expected from the 2021 Charity Golf Day!

Brian Ahmed reported that 6 Bingo Nights which have operated since Covis-19 restrictions eased. So far, Monday Bingo has earned for the Club an average weekly profit of $1,200! For the remainder of this year Brian expects that the Club will have received very substantial funds from Bingo to allocate for worthwhile community purposes.

From the last Board Meeting
Our Ongoing Meeting Venue
The Board believes that our venue should continue to be the ISCW.

Rotary Centenary Environment Project
Kathryn Williams submitted a Proposal for Tree Planting Day along the Werribee River, to be held on Saturday April 17. The Board is in the process of finalizing this R100 Project.

Club Charity Funds
Board members Brian Ahmed and Graham Roper will be providing further direction to the Board regarding how money raised from Bingo can best be allocated.

A BIG NIGHT Next Week for the Friends of Rotary and Rotary Partners!
We will be having a special Presentation Night next week to acknowledge and thank the Friends of Rotary.

With their great assistance the Club has helped provide the Breakfast Club at Wyndham Park PS, sell sausages at Bunnings, assist the Charity Golf Day and make Facemasks to donate and sell.
This is also a Partners Night. I warmly invite Rotary partners to join us for a night of Recognition and Thank You to our supporters – plus lots of social conversation for everyone!

Enjoy the open air this week!
Michael

THIS WEEK AT ROTARY

This weeks guest speaker was Lyle Raison, husband of past member Pam.

Lyle provided us with an extremely informative talk about his time in the Army, Service in Vietnam, and work since leaving the force.

Lyle joined worked odd jobs on farms and orchards, waiting for the day he turned 17 and became eligible to join the Australian Army. The Vietnam War had been under way for many years, and new recruits were required to undertake 18 months training, before being eligible to undertake overseas service. In April 1971 Lyle packed his bags and was shipped off to Vietnam.  Lyle believes there was a lot of politics involved as 64,000 men did National Service, but only 15,000 went to Vietnam. As a 22 year old in Vietnam, Lyle had 25 men under his command.

During his time in Vietnam & later Malaysia, Lyle experienced the trauma that soldiers were left with. Post Traumatic Stress was unknown, and soldiers were diagnosed with depression. On his return from Australia Lyle became an advocate for soldiers. This included ensuring soldiers were recognised, received medical support. He was involved in Legacy supporting widows.

Lyle became a victim himself, unable to sleep or function properly, and often suffering nightmares. His GP recommended he immediately cease his involvement with the military, and shortly after made a full recovery.

NEXT WEEK - Tuesday 2nd March

Next week will be our Recognition Night, where we recognise the volunteers and Friends of Rotary, who have assisted us during the last 2 years.

Partners are welcome to attend.

Please make the effort to attend, to ensure that these people who have assisted us so well, are recognised by the club.

WERRIBEE ROTARY GOLF DAY - 26th MARCH

Our revenue target was to achieve $20,000 in sponsorship and player payments. This was considered a realistic Covid target. We still have 4 weeks to go, and we have commitments for $19,500. We have had to increase our target to $25,000.

So far we have 95 players registered which is pretty good, as the course can only hold 126.

Do you know someone who plays golf? Ask them to register & see if they can get a group of four together.

Do you know someone who can sponsor us? Speak to them, or pass the details onto Ian Hovey to follow up.

See Ian Hovey if you need registration forms.
Ian Hovey is doing a superb job. Well done Hoves.

Everyone knows someone with an interesting story to tell. Please pass their details on to Ian Hovey so we can follow them up to speak to us in person or on Zoom at a later date.

Bingo
Do you have any suggestions on how we should spend the money we raise from Bingo? As the money was raised in Werribee, it should have a Werribee focus. Speak to Brian Ahmed or Graham Roper if you have any suggestions.

Yvonne Moon OAM Memorial Concert for Rocan
Many members know of the great work of the late Yvonne Moon. Her husband Fred has organised a 5 hour music concert fundraiser, to raise funds for Rocan.

A lot of Werribee members knew Yvonne, and it would be great if we could organise a table of 10.

Sunday 11/4 3.33 to 8.00pm, at Yarraville Club.
$30 entry - finger food and drinks at bar prices.

Speak to President Michael if you want to join the Werribee table.

Bulletin
Many thanks to Ian Hovey for doing last weeks bulletin, while I was avoiding 'the lockdown' holidaying in Tassie.  Ross S.

Interact
Kim & Graham met 16 enthusiastic students last week at Wyndham Central College. They will be holding there election for office bearers next week.
Six students have volunteered to attend the upcoming Rypen weekend. Rypen only allow two students per school, so we are seeing if we can get the others in.

Ian Knight
Ian has had surgery to relieve pressure on his spinal cord. He got through the surgery okay, and now in the intense rehabilitation phase. As his mobility had decreased significantly, he now has to go through the process of 'learning to walk again'.

Most of Ian's rehab occurs in the mornings, so don't call him until late afternoon or evening.
