PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
As a follow-up from last week’s Club Forum discussion, this week we had a trial run of our Zoom meeting format, which took a similar structure to our meetings at the Italian Social Club.
Members joined the meeting at 6.30 pm for an informal chat, followed at 6.45 pm with the business session, focusing on Club matters, reports, discussion and announcements.
At about 7 pm the Guest Speaker was introduced to give a talk, followed by Q & A. The meeting concluded with final comments from the President, together with a short presentation of some Rotary projects in Malta.

I thought the trial meeting format went off quite well - and the same format will continue for next week’s meeting. Thank you to everyone for adopting the ‘HANDS UP’ system on Zoom for comments and questions. While this is a bit clunky, is seems to work!

What do you think about the meeting format? If you have views either way then please bring them up next week.

I am continuing the practice which Past President Brian Ahmed introduced – but with a twist!
Each week Brian concluded his meeting with a short presentation about one overseas Rotary Club, which I found always to be interesting and informative.
Following his lead, I am selecting a particular country each week to show some of projects being undertaken there by Rotary Clubs.  So far, we have been to Brazil, Russia, Italy and Malta!

The Facemasks Project team, led by Mary Macauley and the Cut, Giggle and Sew group, is up and running! It is fantastic to see this completely new Club Project getting underway during Covid-19 lockdown time. The Facemasks Project will be meeting a great need - providing washable and recyclable cloth facemasks to needy people in the community, at no cost.
The very generous financial donations from Rob Fava and John Micallef for the Facemasks Project will enable Mary’s group to purchase any requirements needed for the facemasks.
Mary is gathering together a team of volunteer helpers to cut out material for the facemasks and to do the sewing. Later on, Rotarians may be asked to help with the distribution of the facemasks.

It was great to have Assistant District Governor Amrit Singh visit us again. Welcome again to Vas Samaltanos on your fourth visit to our meetings.
Amrit and Vas, I hope we will continue having you with us!

This Week on Zoom
This week on Zoom, our guest speaker was Leanne Down - CEO of the Werribee Mercy Hospital Foundation.
The Foundation was established in 1993, when a large deceased estate was left to the hospital. Another major donation was made a few years later. The foundation has $4m invested, and can use the principal or the investment income towards hospital requirements. The fund has distributed $1,750,000 since its inception.
The Foundation can use funds for :
  • Equipment
  • Programs
  • Research & Innovation
  • Capital projects
The foundation is currently fundraising for a $30,000 communications system, for its Mental Health Hotline.

Next Week - 04.08.2020 at 6.45pm
Rob Sinni - Director of Point Cook Real Estate.
The Toorak oftheWest - Sanctuary Lakes.

Coronavirus
As I am writing this bulletin, the speculation on the radio, is that today's numbers will be more than 700 cases. This is depressing. More than 100 people who are positive, were out shopping. What do they not understand about 'stay at home'. We need to adopt the Chinese approach, and lock them in their houses.

WERN
WERN is operating on a reduced scale at about 50% capacity. We did 15 deliveries last week, including furniture for a family of 11.

Next Tuesday 04.08.2020, I will be going to Koala at Rowville to pick up a truckload of beds. If anyone wants to come for a drive with me for 3-4 hours, give me a call on 0418 692 329. It would be nice to have someone to talk to.

Guest speakers
Everyone knows someone with an interesting story to tell. Pass them onto Ian Hovey so we can follow them up to speak to us on Zoom at a later date.

Werribee Hospital Foundation
The foundation is running a Big Buzz Virtual Trivia Night, on Friday 14 August at 6.30pm.

There will be 5 rounds of general trivia, and the cost is $25 per team for as many people on that device as you like.

Proceeds will go to the upgrade of the 24hr Mental Health Crisis Line.
