THIS WEEK......

Jeff "Joffa' Corfe - Collingwood Cheer Squad

Enzo with one of Joffa's jackets he brought at auction.

Our guest speaker was Jeff "Joffa" Corfe, best known as the leader of the cheer squad of the Collingwood Football Club.

We have all seen Joffa on the television, but his life story reveals years of struggle, and a wonderful contribution to community service.

Joffa grew up in East Preston, which was referred to as "Little Chicago". Joffa's mother suffered from mental illness, which had a profound impact on the family. Joffa's mother was hospitalised 3 or 4 times a year for her mental illness, and as his father was unable to look after the family, Joffa was sent to boys homes during his mothers convalescence.

At 14 years of age he was 'kicked out ' of the family home, and lived on the streets for 6 months or so, as there were no facilities in Melbourne for homeless people. Drugs & violence were daily occurrences. At 14-1/2 years of age his best friend hung himself.

Joffa never missed a magpie game at Victoria Park, and became involved with the cheer squad. He saw Eddie McGuire on channel 9 one night with a gold jacket on, and asked Eddie if he could get it to wear every week. His first jacket is on display at Collingwood. Since then Joffa has got a new jacket every year, which he auctions for charity.

Joffa has been working for many years for the Salvation Army dealing with homeless, and with Epilepsy Australia, as his daughter suffers from the illness.

Guests : Robyn Ballan, Christine Conley, Ann Smith & Kitty from RC Laverton Point Cook.

ST. ANDREW'S PARISH FAIR - 16th NOVEMBER

The St. Andrew's primary school will be holding its annual Parish Fair on Saturday 16th November and President Brian is keen for us to have a stall at the event. He says this is an opportunity for us to have a greater exposure with the greater community and to raise some funds at this well-established and popular family fair.

PAUL HARRIS BREAKFAST - 21st NOVEMBER

The Rotary Club of Central Melbourne is holding its 27th annual Rotary Foundation Paul Harris Breakfast on Thursday 21st November 2019 at the RACV City Club.

  • Ian Hovey introduced the Alphabet Racing scheme to commence on Sat 05 October.

  • Rotary Overseas Recycled Playgrounds - a group of club members assisted with the training & removal of a playground in Yarraville last week. We are experts now, and are waiting for the next playground to do on our own.

  • Tamarind in Uganda - Update. An autopsy revealed that the 300 of the 350 chickens in Uganda died from Infectious Bursal Disease. The remaining 50 are doing well. This is a big eye opener for Chris and his team,  highlighting the importance of hygiene & keeping diseases out of his flock of birds. We have also been advised that Sandy Cameron from Meredith Dairy has committed to more than $20,000 to assist Chris to complete a storage shed. He will put more in if needed. This is a wonderful donation from Sandy, that is worthy of recognition by Werribee Rotary.

  • If you haven't paid your yearly subs, speak with the treasurer. Fees can be paid by installments if you need to.
