Next Week
Meeting is back at Italian Sports Club Werribee
Guest Speaker
Cathy Booth - Umoja Orphanage - Kenya
Cathy Booth’s passion for helping to give vulnerable children a second chance at life is inspirational. As a school teacher, mother of four, and grandmother of four, Cathy has always been an advocate for helping children to reach their full potential. After a short visit to Kenya in 2010, Cathy returned to Australia determined to start her own charity to combat child abandonment and orphaned children.  In 2016, after five long years of fundraising in Australia and creating the required infrastructure in Kenya, her dream of opening a self-sustainable children’s village in Ukunda, Kenya was finally a reality. Hear the difficulties of running the Umoja Project in a poverty stricken area of Kenya .
Cathy will speak about how Umoja is so much more than just a children’s home.  Umoja is a project  which also helps the community, and how the support of Rotary and Rotarian Volunteers, has helped her team truly achieve the extraordinary while Cathy has continued to work full time up until the end of June this year in her profession, whilst overseeing the project from Australia. Cathy returns to Kenya twice a year to take Rotary Volunteers and other volunteers to the project.
We hope that you will see how determination, persistence, and passion have made this project what it is today.  Cathy hopes she can be your inspiration.
Last Week Guest Speaker
Sarah Norton & Dinesh - Level Crossing Removal Removal Authority
Sarah & Dinesh detailed to members and guests, the preferred & non-preferred options for the Hoppers Crossing, Cherry Street & Werribee Street level crossing removals.
Consultation has been ongoing for 2 months, and the closing date for public consultation is this Friday 26 July 2019.
It was a very interesting talk for members, but what was clear following question time, was that the preferred option for the three crossings, still had a lot of issues and problems, and are not going to be the panacea for Werribee's traffic problems.
Manor Court Donation
During our meeting PP Graham Roper presented a cheque for $20,000 to Manor Court Chairman Emily Keogh, to be put towards the replacement of furniture in the $400,000 Upgraded Memory Support Unit.
Emily believes that the Memory Support Unit in now the best of any facility in Wyndham. Emily thanked Werribee Rotary for their ongoing support of Manor Court.
Members and guests were able to tour the new facility.
IN BRIEF........
  • Footy Tipping - Round 18.  Prez Brian won the $10, tipping a winning margin of 22 points, missing the actual by 1 point. Tipping is starting to get tight at the top. I think it is too late for anyone to make a charge and trouble the the top 5.  The ladder after round 18 has Graham Roper and Ian Hovey on top spot on 100, but the chasers have nearly got them. Ann Smith & Mary Maguire are 2nd on 99, and Loy Dowling is third on 98. The key to the next month is who has the confidence to pick their own team. The Tigers are coming good. The Cats have the wobbles, and  Ann Smith has kept moving up the ladder, because she hasn't tipped the 'Mighty Dees' for 2 months.

  • The next Bunnings BBQ is on 22 August 2019. Geoff needs a few more volunteers, as the same ones are turning up each BBQ. Call Geoff if you can assist for an hour or two.

  •  Cut Giggle & Sew - will now be held monthly. The next date will be announced shortly. Lyn Fava showed us what the team are working on each week and made a presentation of items to Manor Court.                           Click here to view brochure

  • District Conference Bendigo 27-29 March 2020 - Brian has booked rooms at the Quality Apartments Lakeside. Let Brian know if you want to put your name to a room.

  • Bingo - we made another $397 profit last night. We need some ideas/assistance to promote Bingo. Another 15 players would ensure we made $1,000 a night profit.

Details for the Beyond Blue Football match have been finalised.
On Tuesday 6th August our meeting at ISCW will launch the match. The night will be a partners night.
We will have a guest speaker from Beyond Blue, as well as Jack Fitzpatrick & Michael Barlow from Werribee Football Club.
The Beyond Blue Cup under 18's game will follow the Werribee & Box Hill game at 5.00pm. Entry is a gold coin donation.
Werribee Football Club is providing a table at the presidents lunch for $60 pp, and will donate $30pp to Beyond Blue. See Peter Sandlant if interested.
We already have a full table booked, and will work on a second.
