PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

President’s Message

Back in Business with mid-week Bunnings BBQ’s!

Congratulations to Ross Smith for offering to be the Bunnings BBQ Organiser.

Ross explained that having a mid-week BBQ each month will be an important component of the Club’s fund-raising. This will supplement and be a backstop for the Bingo income.

Ross has booked our first BBQ for Thurs, June 3rd at Bunnings Hoppers Crossing.

To run each BBQ Ross will be looking for:

· 9 people on the roster between 10 am to 4 pm, with 3 people in each shift of 2 hours

· 1 or 2 people to assist at the start and end of the day with collection, delivery and return of BBQ requirements from Brian’s storeroom

Welcome again

It was a delight to have Jerestene Saher and Werner Steinborn with us again this week.

Their first visits were as guests of Peter Ross and Vas Samaltanos.

I warmly encourage other members to bring along a guest to our meetings. Guests’ meals will be complimentary of the Club.

Bingo Progress

Brian Ahmed was chuffed to see this week’s Bingo numbers set a new record – 112 players!

The Bingo Night is run by volunteer husband and wife team of Michael & Hetty Azzari, with Ian Rawlings as Bingo Caller. With this week’s big attendance, Michael was able to increase the prize-money – with two $1000 and six $100 jackpots being won.

There was a great vibe in the Bingo room!

Brian is very hopeful that the Bingo attendances will continue going in an upward direction!

THIS WEEK AT ROTARY - 18.05.2021

Guest Speaker - Sharon Oats

Tonight's guest speaker was Sharon Oats - Lifestyle Coordinator - Baptcare Wyndham Lodge.

Baptcare operates in Victoria, Sth Aust & Tasmania. Eight years ago it took over the operation of Wyndham Lodge - a Lyons run charity, that was loosing money, it was old and rundown, and not viable.

The majority of the aged care facility was knocked down and rebuilt, over three levels, and comprising 150 beds. Adverse publicity for residential aged care over the last few years, means that Wyndham Lodge, like most other aged care facilities, is operating well below full capacity.

During Covid, where residents were restricted to their own rooms, a vision was developed to build a sensory garden outdoor space on an adjoining block of land owned by Baptcare. The land is 45mt a 17mt. Concept drawings have been completed, and Dementia Australia is contributing expertise and some assistance with funding. Baptcare estimates that the garden will cost $70,000 - $80,000, and are looking for support with the physical building, and fundraising. James Randall has agreed to donate the sand & soil for the project. Well done James.

Ross Conley tipped 8 out of 9 to win round 9. There was a large pack 9 tippers who got 7 - Tony Tod, Lucky Phil, Ann S, Groper, Hoves, Daide, Liz, Ross S & Sunline.

TIP OF THE WEEK
When the supermarkets and green grocers notice their lettuce are wilted or soft, or showing signs of stress, they leave them submerged in a container of cool water overnight. The lettuce absorbs the water and looks lovely and fresh again.
