PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Presidents Message:

As we enter the 4th week of lockdown 6 it is very pleasing to see a good number of members attending our weekly zoom meetings. With Covid numbers dropping over the last couple of days (45 today) I am hopeful that some of the restrictions will be lifted on September 2. Hopefully it won’t be too long before we can return to holding our meetings at the ISCW.

I respectfully ask members to keep in touch with our members who do not attend our zoom meetings to make sure they are alright. It is also very important to check in on family members as well.

I would like to again thank Ian Hovey for all the work he does in making sure we are able to meet on zoom each week. Some of his Ted Talks have been very inspiring just like the one we had last night, what a brilliant lady.

Congratulations to Brian Ahmed for winning the Werribee Rotary Football Tipping Competition.

Next weeks guest speaker will be Elaine Robb who is the CEO of Encompass Community Services.

I will close with a thought for the week: If you don’t come out of this lockdown with a new skill, more knowledge, better health and fitness, you never lacked time you lacked discipline.

Have a great week and above all stay safe.

Graham

THIS WEEK AT ROTARY - 24.08.2021

Ian Hovey organised another Ted Talk for us, from the Women in Leadership Series.

The speaker was Ngozi Okenjo-Iweala.
Ngozi is 69 years of age, and the Current Director General of the World Trade Organisation.

She was educated at Harvard as an economist, and spent 25 years working at the World Bank in Washington DC. On her return to Nigeria, she server two three year terms as Nigerian Finance Minister, and one term as Minister for Foreign Affairs.

She currently sits on the Board of international organisations Danone, Standard Chartered Bank, Twitter, The Mandella Institute and others.

Her current crusade is to address political corruption in Africa, and to return billions of dollars taken from African countries, and currently hidden in overseas banks.

Encompass Community Services
Encompass Community Services

Elaine has been the CEO of Encompass Community Services since 1995.

Encompass is a quiet achiever in the Geelong community. For over 30 years, they have been actively engaging with people with physical, intellectual, sensory and psychological disabilities; as well as other individuals who are disadvantaged such as disengaged youth, long-term unemployed and those facing financial, social or learning barriers. By working together with the community, they aim to end damaging stigmas and stereotypes; and open doors of opportunities for all people – whatever background, whatever ability.
