The long and the short of it at the Werribee Zoo

Past District Governor Dr Murray Verso is providing his medical knowledge and experience to assist a Rotary not-for-profit group called End Trachoma by 2020.

Trachoma is an infectious eye disease that can be prevented with good hygiene practices. It is still present in remote Aboriginal communities and can lead to permanent blindness. Australia is the world’s only developed country with trachoma. The World Health Organisation has a global goal to eliminate trachoma by 2020.

NOTE: We will also be presenting a cheque for $20,000 to the Mercy Hospital Foundation from money raised at our annual golf day. Partners and volunteers are very welcome to attend.

Our club will donate $3,750 towards a relief fund that was set up to support those severely affected by the recent bush fires in Western Victoria and Southern NSW. In Victoria, 18 homes were lost and 40,000 hectares of land was burnt while, in NSW, 65 homes were lost in the Bega area.

The money to be donated will come from funds we received from the Fit4Use store in 2017.

You are invited to join District Governor Peter Frueh and Anne and District Governor Elect Bronwyn Stephens and Mark for the District 9800 Changeover lunch at “The International” in Brighton on Sunday 3rd June.

This year the Changeover will be celebrating our District and all that we have achieved together – Rotarians and Clubs, with assistance and support from the District Leadership Team.

There will be fun, special projects and Rotarians honoured.

Entertainment will be supplied by our own sensational “Barking Dogs” with Sue Foley. So bring your dancing shoes.

Dress to impress but don’t feel the need to be uncomfortable.

In true Rotary style, there will be funding opportunities for two projects of $1,000 each. Submit a short, informal project plan, register a table of 10 before May 18th and be ready to claim the prize and announce the project to all our District Rotary friends. You could even gain support from other Clubs and possibly receive a Foundation District Grant.

Come's time to SHAKE, RATTLE AND ROLL.

  1. We have another mid-week BBQ at Bunnings this Thursday (12th April). Members and Friends of Rotary are invited to help out on this day if possible. Please email Jason Daddy if you can help.

  2. The next two mid-week Bunnings BBQ's will be on Thursday 17th May and Thursday 14th June.

  3. We have also been asked to cook sausages at the Werribee Mansion Fun Run on Sunday 22nd April from 8:30-11:30am for 1,500 participants. The event is in aid of the Leukemia Foundation. Send an email to Jason if you are available for this.

Rotary International President Ian Riseley has set down the challenge to Rotary clubs around the world to plant one tree for each member during this Rotary year.

Our Community Committee is planning to do better than that. In conjunction with Wyndham Council, we will be having a working bee on Sunday 29th April to plant one tree for each year of membership in our club. The total number of years of membership is 750 (give or take a few years), so we will be planting 750 trees along the Werribee River near the Shaws Rd bridge. And we will need all hands on deck to get the job.

The Rotary Club of Hoppers Crossing is holding "STYLE ME AUTUMN" fashion show on Tuesday 17th April from 6:30pm to 9:30pm to raise funds for the Werribee Mercy Hospital Critical Care Unit.

The event will be held at the Park Hotel in Watton St, Werribee. The cost of this function is $40 which includes finger food. Drinks can be purchased at bar prices.

Tickets can be purchased online through TryBooking.

IN BRIEF........
  • Phil Purdy has been spending every Saturday in the last couple of months having group golf lessons at The Sands course in Torquay. Last Saturday was the final lesson followed by a "graduation ceremony". Phil passed with flying colours and received his certificate. Note the nickname on the certificate. Can't imagine why he got that name. Click on the photo below to enlarge the image.

  • District Assembly will be held on Sunday May 20 at Tabcorp Park in Melton. This is an opportunity for incoming Board members to join President Elect Graham Roper to gain fresh ideas about their specific portfolio and to connect with other Rotarians in the District prior to the start of the new Rotary year.

  • Footy Tipping - There were 3 people who guessed the same winning margin in Round 3. They will each receive $3.30. Ross Conley was the best tipster with 8 out of 9. On top of the ladder are Tony Todaro and Ian Hovey with 19 wins each.
