PRESIDENTS REPORT
During this Rotary year, we’ve been doing some really great things in terms of fund-raising projects and donating to worthy causes. For example, we contributed to the flood appeal in Rochester and we provided shelter equipment for victims of the earthquake disaster in Turkey. These are just a few of many humanitarian projects that we have been involved in. My chest fills with great pride to be part of such a compassionate and active club and I’m sure yours does too.

With Andi Barnfield doing all she can to positively promote our efforts through various media sources, let’s hope that our community, both near and far, takes note of our good work and we can reap some rewards further down the track.
But, while we already have many runs on the board this year, I think that our efforts in the past week have surpassed previous achievements. I refer to our annual golf day and the presentation of the new Smiley Scope device to Werribee Mercy Hospital.

On Friday, we completed another successful golf day which has raised a significant amount of money for the medical research centre at the Werribee Campus of Victoria University. A full field of players were treated to fine weather which resulted in some hot golf. The eventual winners were a group of guys from Werribee Sand & Soil which was their second win in 3 years. Jim Randall says that the Golf Day Cup is taking pride of place on his mantel piece at home.

During lunch, the principal medical researcher, Professor Vasso Apostolopoulos, expressed her gratitude to our club for the magnificent effort in staging the event and for raising such a large amount of money for the research work that she and her team are undertaking. We will present a cheque to Vasso as soon as we know the final figures.

While the golf day is always a winner, it doesn’t just happen on its own. I would like to express my sincere thanks, first and foremost, to the chief organiser Ross Conley who has worked hard over the past 4 months to bring it all together. He has been well supported by his committee consisting of Ross Smith, Ian Hovey, Graham Roper and Rob Fava. And, of course, where would we be without the fantastic efforts of our volunteers who provided much-needed support before, during and after the event. So special thanks to Roland Wade, Peter Sandlant and his grandson, Graham Roper, Brian Ahmed, Kim Deneys, Peter and Elizabeth Ross, Ann Smith, Barb Purdy, Micki Hovey, Christine Conley, Anne Randall and her friend Nancy, Lyn Fava and Geoff Smith. If I’ve left anyone out, my sincere apologies.

The second big thing that happened during the week, was a visit by Graham, Kim and myself to Werribee Mercy Hospital where we were able to see the newly-acquired Smiley Scope virtual reality device for the first time. Staff in the paediatric ward were so grateful for our donation. They say it will be invaluable for children to overcome their fears during procedures which may initiate pain such as an intravenous injection. I even had the chance to try the device on but fortunately I didn’t get an injection. Based on my experience, it will be a winner with the kids and I expect that it won’t be long before the hospital adds another one or two due to the high demand for its use. We were proud to be your representatives at this meeting.

I won’t be at the meeting next week and neither will my normal stand-in, Kim. So I have handed over the reins to President Elect Nominee, Rob Fava. I haven’t really had the chance to congratulate Rob for agreeing to become President in 2024-25. Congratulations Rob. It’s great news and I know he will do a fantastic job with our support. Please turn up next Tuesday for what I am sure will be a meeting full of entertainment and/or surprises.

In two week’s time (Tuesday 28th March), we are planning to have another vocational visit. This time we will be going to Wyndham Tech School in Hoppers Lane. This is a new high-tech facility which hosts secondary school students from about 20 schools in Wyndham who attend classes to learn all sorts of things relating to technology. Peter Sandlant and I visited the school several weeks ago and we were blown away by the variety of different technological activities that kids get involved in. I hope that all members and their partners can attend the evening. The visit will start at 6pm and finish at about 7pm. Then we will head off for a meal at the Tigers Clubhouse.
