PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

President’s Message

An Unforgettable Rotary Year
This week’s Zoom Meeting has brought to a conclusion, hopefully, a year in which our Club was unable to meet together for a weekly meal, have lots of conversation and undertake our usual  Rotary activities.

I would like to thank all of you who attended our Zoom meetings, whether on a regular or occasional basis. During the very difficult and disruptive Covid-19 pandemic your support for the Club in this way, has been very reassuring for me, as President.
It means that we have a good momentum to get back into action with the lifting of the Covid-19 restrictions:

Bunnngs BBQ is on Sun, Dec 20th
Phil Purdy will be asking members to assist with the BBQ roster. The Club is looking for lots of support as this should be a big fund-raiser. Bunnings requires 5 volunteers per shift. We will be running shifts from 10 till midday, midday till 2.00, and 2.00 till 4.00.

Bingo is starting up on Mon, Jan 11that the Italian Social Club.
The team of Brian Ahmed, Roly Wade and Rob Fava will be asking members to assist by going on the Monday evening roster.

The Charity Golf Day is on Fri, Mar 26th starting early in the morning.
Ian Hovey will have information after we return in 2021.

Social Activities are Returning!
Next Tues, Dec 15th, the Club is having our Annual Christmas Breakup at the Wyndham Cache in K Road. It is not too late for members with partners to book in with Brian Ahmed for this wonderful night.

On Tues, Jan 12th it has been suggested that we have an informal Club Social get-together and meal.  The next Board Meeting will be discussing this.  All members will receive further information to confirm the date and a venue.

Our First Club Dinner Meeting for 2021
This will be on Tues, Jan 19th at 6.30 pm.  This week the Board will confirm the venue and members will be notified.

Best wishes to you all for the Festive Season and New Year!
Micheal

This Week on Zoom

Speakers from Wyndham College
- Connie Faranda - Vice principal
- Leanne Gagatsis - Principal

Connie provided us with a very informative talk on the last 12 months of education under Covid. In April/May, more than 75% of schools in developed countries were closed, with students and teachers working from home. Throughout Covid, schools around the world have been sharing their remote learning experiences, to ensure that 'best practice' is being followed.

There was lots of negatives with remote learning, but amongst the negatives a small group of students thrived and developed.

Negatives
  • As expected the disadvantaged students suffered the most.
  • The education department & schools went to great lengths to support these students, who didn't have access to computers or internet. (about 50%)
  • Many students struggled with the reduced level of one on one engagement with their teacher.
  • Under remote learning, only about 60% of the curriculum that would have been taught in the class, was covered under remote learning.
  • There was concern with the mental health of students
  • The lack of social contact with friends
Positives
  • A small number of students excelled with remote learning. These were students who 'were quiet in the classroom'.
  • Interaction between parents & teachers was far greater than in class learning.
Remote learning was being assessed weekly by the school, and extra sessions were scheduled with students who were struggling. A lot of paper based work was allocated for students without regular access to computers.

The school will be holding a student led conference in December, to review remote learning, and validate what was achieved during the year. Remote learning will remain, as a method of communication between teachers & students.

Birthdays & Anniversaries

One birthday this week - Mim Micallef. Happy birthday for 13th Mim.

Alphabet Racing - after meetings 19 & 20 (6 weeks to go)

As they come up the hill and around the bend, another major contender has burst to the front.

Garfield the Cat has confidently clawed his way past many hopeful hacks and is now purring along like the cat that got the cream. He picked up a magnificent haul of 13 points over the two race meetings and, with just 6 furlongs to go, he now leads by 4 lengths from Filthy Phil and Jumbo Jimbo who are neck and neck in second place.

There was some movement from the rear of the field as Steady Redding and Vas O'Leen both collected12 points each. Their impressive runs has given them some hope of snatching a last-gasp victory.

The other one to catch the eye of the punters was Wendy Winx who used her 'W' to wonderful effect and now sits in 4th place ready to pounce.

And, finally, we can officially advise the backers of Frothy Joffa and Pristine Christine that they can rip up their tickets and turn their attention to some more productive activities like knitting or gardening. Both horses are 28 lengths behind the leader and may not even make it to the finish line.

But watch out next week for the two seasoned mares, Sticky Micki and Rockin' Robyn. They have been prancing up and down on the one spot for a few weeks like prima donnas but they are now ready to run.

First – Garfield the Cat - 55 points
Equal Second – Filthy Phil - 51 points
Equal Second – Jumbo Jimbo - 51 points

Werribee Rotary Golf Day

As a result of the improved Covid outcomes, we have taken the decision to proceed with the organisation of our Annual Golf Day.

To 'buy us as much time as possible' we have put the date back to Friday 26th March.

This year we are going to run the event as a morning competition, with a light breakfast and lunch.

We will soon be looking for sponsors & golfers.

We are going to need plenty of volunteers on the day, so put the date in your diary now.
