President’s Message

Developing Closer Links with the Salvos

Our Guest Speakers this week were Captain Phil Abram and Assistant Tim Kite who talked about the work the Salvation Army is doing to support needy people in Wyndham.

The follow-up Q & A opened up a number of possibilities for much closer discussion and engagement between the Salvos and Werribee Rotary.

Phil and Tim offered an invitation for our members to come to lunch on a Tues, Wed or Thurs to meet the other diners and to chat with the Salvo helpers about the work they are doing in Wyndham.

Here is an opportunity for one or more of our members to take up the lead in a new Club PROJECT – a partnership between the Club and Werribee Salvos.

Our Meeting Next Week

The ISCW have advised, that the new Covid restrictions that apply from 11.06.2021, with the cap on the number of patrons, would mean that it is not economical for them to reopen. The ISCW will remain shut until the next level of restrictions are reviewed on Thursday 17 June.. So next weeks meeting will be back on Zoom.

Our visitors this week

Werner Steinborn and Jerestene Saher attended again, while Imran Kashem was unwell and sent his apologies.

At my invitation Jess gave us a very interesting insight of how she makes chocolates, which is part of her business – Jess Catering Services.

Rescheduled Date for Changeover

Graham Roper explained the problems relating to Covid in having Changeover as originally scheduled for Sun, June 20th.

Graham has arranged with Tino and Robyn Ballan to reschedule the Changeover to Sun, July 4th.

The starting time, cost and other arrangements remain the same.

Here’s hoping for our post-lockdown freedom during the week!

Michael

THIS WEEK AT ROTARY - 08.06.2021

This weeks on Zoom, we had a presentation by Captain Phill Abram and Assistant Pastor Tom Kite, from the Salvation Army Werribee.

Tim works for Salvos on Demand, which operates the Food Van at Werribee Station every Friday night. The Salvos have an arrangement with Second Bite, who distribute food from the supermarket chains, that is approaching its use by date or best before date.

Salvos Werribee get a delivery each week, and then set about creating  a menu for their food van, and the lunches they provide from they Watton Street facility.

The Salvos are doing it 'pretty tough' at the moment.
  • Donations from their Annual Red Shield Appeal were just under half of a normal non Covid year, as they were unable to door knock or rattle tins at intersections.
  • Demand for Salvos services during Covid are nearly double the previous normal year.
