Werribee Cliffs
PRESIDENTS MESSAGE

The second and final stage of our Youth Mental Health program was completed last Saturday afternoon when the Hoppers Crossing and Werribee Districts Under-18 football teams battled it out at Chirnside Park. It was a relatively easy win for Werribee but their opposition didn’t give up at any time.

Both teams played the game in very good spirit and demonstrated a healthy respect for each other. It was my pleasant duty to present the Beyond Blue Cup to the captain of the winning team.

Thanks to Peter Sandlant for continuing his long association with this important program and for organising two events that help raise the profile of mental awareness among vulnerable young people. Peter is now working on a similar forum for young girls to be held at MacKillop College in a few months’ time.

At Tuesday’s meeting, we heard from portrait artist, George Petrou, who specialises in painting some of our war heroes. He talked with passion and emotion about the stories behind some of his subjects. It was a very interesting talk which seemed to capture everyone’s interest.

The good news in our cluster is that one of the clubs that we started back in 1973, the Rotary Club of Laverton (now Laverton Point Cook), has reached it’s 50th year and will be celebrating that milestone very soon. Ian Knight was President of our club in 1973 and he was instrumental in setting the club up.

The not-so-good news is that the club has reached the end of the line and will be joining forces with the Rotary Club of Wyndham Harbour. The two merged clubs will be known as Wyndham Harbour.

I’m not sure if I announced that Graham Roper has been selected to be the Assistant Governor for the Hobsons Bay Cluster during 2023-24. Congratulations Graham and I hope it is a very enjoyable year for you.

Next week, we will hear from, Annabelle and Caitlin, the two MacKillop College students who we sponsored to attend the MUNA competition last weekend. Apparently, they really enjoyed the experience and are happy to come along to tell us all about it.

I look forward to your company next week.

Ian

THIS WEEK AT ROTARY

This weeks at Rotary, we welcomed George Petrou OAM s our guest speaker.

George came to Australia from Cyprus as a young boy. He established a graphic design business which started with one person and grew to become a sought after business.

In 2020 he was diagnosed with cancer, which required him to step back from the business and focus on his treatment & recovery. During his recovery he spent a lot of time painting, and was able to generate some spending money from sales of his paintings.

He loved painting portraits and quickly realised that the public did as well, and his portraits were making good money. In 2010, he decided to pursue his passion of Australian history and portrait painting, and produce a book.

The book is called The Art of Sacrifice. It is broken down into 4 chapters.
1. The lost diggers of Vignacourt
2. Victoria Cross recipients.
3. Great Australians
4. All walks of life.

The book is a magnificent publication. There are over 70 featured Australians, and more than 60 authors contributed to the book.

George sold a lot of books at the meeting, with 100% of the proceeds going to Totally & Permanently Incapacitated Australia.

Beyond Blue Cup
Saturday's Beyond Blue Cup saw a win by Werribee.
Well done Peter Sandlant for organising.
